Super 16: Stars rise, Flames return to rankings

The Dallas Stars are up three spots, and the Calgary Flames are back in the NHL.com Super 16 this week.

The Stars, No. 12 last week, are No. 9. The Flames are No. 16, knocking out the Arizona Coyotes.
The top six teams are the same from last week. The Florida Panthers and New York Islanders swapped spots at Nos. 7 and 8, and the Carolina Hurricanes dropped two places.
To create the power rankings, each of the 13 participating staff members puts together his or her version of what the Super 16 should look like. Those are submitted and a point total is assigned to each.
The team picked first is given 16 points, second gets 15, third gets 14 and so on down to No. 16, which gets one point.
Here is the latest Super 16:

1. Washington Capitals (34-12-5)

Total points:206
Last week: No. 1
Hit:The Capitals have an NHL-high 19 road wins this season (19-6-1).
Miss: Evgeny Kuznetsov had one assist in his past six games. The center hasn't scored in nine games.

2. St. Louis Blues (31-12-8)

Total points: 188
Last week:No. 2
Hit: Zach Sanford has five points (two goals, three assists) in his past three games. The forward had one goal, one assist, four shots on goal and five hits in a 5-4 shootout win at the Flames on Tuesday, the Blues' first shootout victory of the season (1-3).
Miss:Vladimir Tarasenko, who had surgery on his left shoulder Oct. 29, could be out until late April, general manager Doug Armstrong said. The forward initially was expected to miss five months, which would have put him back in late March, but Armstrong said Monday that his recovery could be closer to six months.

3. Boston Bruins (29-10-12)

Total points: 182
Last week:No. 3
Hit:The Bruins have earned at least one point in 26 of 28 home games (17-2-9).
Miss:They play 18 of their final 31 games on the road, including 11 of their next 17 through March 5.

4. Pittsburgh Penguins (31-14-5)

Total points: 166
Last week:No. 4
Hit:The Penguins have won three games after trailing by at least three goals, tying their single-season record (2008-09). The NHL record is four, accomplished by the 1983-84 Minnesota North Stars, 1983-84 Edmonton Oilers and 1989-90 Detroit Red Wings.
Miss:NHL All-Star defenseman Kris Letang has no goals and five assists in 12 games since Dec. 30.

5. Tampa Bay Lightning (30-15-5)

Total points: 164
Last week: No. 5
Hit:Steven Stamkos has five goals and four assists during a five-game point streak. The center had 15 points (four goals, 11 assists) in the 15 games prior to the streak.
Miss:Yanni Gourde has been held without a point in eight straight games. The forward had no goals and five assists in 29 games since Nov. 27.

6. Colorado Avalanche (28-15-6)

Total points: 140
Last week: No. 6
Hit:The Avalanche went 5-2-2 in January, giving them four straight months with a points percentage above .500 (8-2-2 in October, 8-6-0 in November, 7-5-2 in December). It's the first time since 2003-04 that they were above .500 in each of the first four calendar months of a season.
Miss: They are 2-for-25 on the power play (8.0 percent) in their past eight games.

7. Florida Panthers (28-16-5)

Total points: 116
Last week:No. 8
Hit: Florida has won six straight games, scoring at least four goals in each and going 7-for-20 on the power play (35.0 percent).
Miss: The Panthers will play 10 of their next 14 games on the road, where they have won four in a row.

8. New York Islanders (29-15-5)

Total points:108
Last week: No. 7
Hit: The Islanders were 2-for-2 on the power play in a 4-2 win against the New York Rangers on Jan. 21 after going 2-for-25 in their previous 12 games.
Miss: Mathew Barzal has scored one goal in 14 games since Dec. 27. The center was benched for the third period against the Rangers, the Islanders' final game before their 10-day break.

9. Dallas Stars (28-18-4)

Total points:101
Last week:No. 12
Hit:Jamie Benn needs five goals to reach 300 in his NHL career. The forward played his 795th NHL game, all with the Stars, in a 5-3 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Wednesday.
Miss: Roope Hintz is day to day with an upper-body injury. The forward did not play against Toronto.

10. Columbus Blue Jackets (27-16-8)

Total points:89
Last week:No. 10
Hit:The Blue Jackets have allowed six goals in their season-high six-game winning streak.
Miss: Nothing, once you realize they've won six in a row and are 16-2-4 in their past 22 games despite a significant number of injuries: forwards Josh Anderson (shoulder), Brandon Dubinsky (wrist) and Alexandre Texier (back); defensemen Ryan Murray (lower body) and Dean Kukan (knee); and goalie Joonas Korpisalo (knee).

11. Carolina Hurricanes (29-18-3)

Total points: 84
Last week:No. 9
Hit:The Hurricanes have an NHL-high .941 winning percentage in games they lead after the first period (16-0-1). They are one of two teams (Capitals) without a regulation loss when leading after the first.
Miss: They're 1-for-23 on the power play (4.3 percent) in nine games since Jan. 5.

12. Vancouver Canucks (29-18-4)

Total points:78

Hit: The Canucks have won nine consecutive home games since Dec. 19. They're 17-5-3 at Rogers Arena this season.
Miss: Forward Brock Boeser had no points in five straight games before he had an assist in a 5-2 win at the San Jose Sharks on Wednesday.

13. Philadelphia Flyers (27-17-6)

Total points:43
Last week: No. 13
Hit: The Flyers are 17-4-4 at home, and a big reason is their special teams. They have scored on 23.0 percent of their power plays (10th in NHL) and killed 86.8 percent of power plays (third) at Wells Fargo Center.
Miss: They are 10-13-2 on the road, and a big reason, again, is their special teams. They have scored on 15.6 percent on their power plays (tied for 23rd) and killed 77.6 percent of power plays (24th) on the road.

14. Toronto Maple Leafs (27-17-7)

Total points: 36
Last week:No. 15
Hit:The Maple Leafs have allowed three power-play goals in their past nine games since Jan. 4, going 18-for-21 (85.7 percent) on the penalty kill. They killed 66.7 percent (14-for-21) of power plays in nine games from Dec. 14-Jan. 2.
Miss: Toronto has two wins in its past seven home games (2-2-3).

15. Edmonton Oilers (26-18-6)

Total points: 31
Last week: No. 14
Hit:Ryan Nugent-Hopkins had four goals and five assists during a six-game point streak. The center has had at least one point in eight of the past nine games, with six goals and eight assists in that span.
Miss:Mikko Koskinen has a 4.18 goals-against average and an .867 save percentage (19 goals against on 143 shots) in five games since Dec. 21.

16. Calgary Flames (27-19-6)

Hit: The Flames are tied with the Penguins for second in the NHL with 12 wins in games when they allowed the first goal (Capitals, 14). They are 12-16-3.
Miss: Calgary has allowed the first goal in an NHL-high 31 games.
