Super 16: Islanders jump six spots, move into top 10

The New York Islanders, who are in first place in the Metropolitan Division, continued their climb up the Super 16 power rankings, moving up six spots to No. 6 this week.

It's the first time the Islanders have been in the top 10 this season.
The Calgary Flames moved up one spot to No. 2, their highest ranking of the season, knocking the Winnipeg Jets down one spot. The Jets had been No. 2 for five consecutive weeks.
And, for the seventh consecutive week, the Tampa Bay Lightning are the unanimous No. 1. It is the eighth straight week they have been No. 1 in the power rankings.
To create the power rankings, each of the 13 staff members puts together his or her version of what the Super 16 should look like. Those are submitted and a point total is assigned to each.
The team picked first is given 16 points, second gets 15, third gets 14 and so on down to No. 16, which gets one point.
Here is the latest Super 16, with some news and notes to follow for each team:

1. Tampa Bay Lightning (37-10-2)

Total points: 208
Last week:No. 1
Hit: The Lightning lead the NHL with a .778 winning percentage in games decided by one goal (14-2-2), and they're second with a .762 winning percentage in games decided by at least three goals (16-5).
Miss:Forward Tyler Johnson had a lower-body injury and missed a 6-3 win against the San Jose Sharks on Saturday, Tampa Bay's final game before its mandatory five-day break before 2019 Honda NHL All-Star Weekend.

2. Calgary Flames (33-13-5)

Total points: 187
Last week:No. 3
Hit: The Flames are 8-0-1 in their past nine games and 11-1-2 in 14 games since Dec. 27.
Miss:Nothing.

3. Winnipeg Jets (31-15-2)

Total points: 183
Last week:No. 2
Hit:The Jets have not lost three games in a row this season. They have lost consecutive games twice (Nov. 21-23, Dec. 27-29). They also have five winning streaks of at least three games, including three of at least four games.
Miss: Ben Chiarot has missed the past three games, but the defenseman is expected to return after the All-Star break. Jets forward Nikolaj Ehlers (upper body) and defenseman Dustin Byfuglien (lower body) remain on injured reserve.

4. San Jose Sharks (29-16-7)

Total points:155
Last week: No. 4
Hit: Tomas Hertl has two hat tricks in the past five games. The forward also tied his NHL career high with 22 goals in 47 games. He scored 22 goals in 79 games last season.
Miss: The Sharks have allowed six goals in each of their past four games. Defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic has missed the past 10 games with an upper-body injury, and defenseman Erik Karlsson has missed the past three with a lower-body injury.

5. Nashville Predators (30-18-4)

Total points: 150
Last week: No. 5
Hit: Viktor Arvidsson has scored five goals in the past five games. The forward has an NHL-high 11 goals in 13 games since Dec. 31.
Miss: The Predators are 0-for-25 on the power play in seven games since Jan. 10.

6. New York Islanders (29-15-5)

Total points: 144
Last week: No. 12
Hit:The Islanders lead the NHL in wins (15) and points (31) since Dec. 15. They have also allowed the fewest goals (33) in that time and have allowed the fewest goals in the NHL this season (118).
Miss: Nothing.

7. Vegas Golden Knights (29-19-4)

Total points: 131
Last week: No. 8
Hit: Alex Tuch has 14 points (four goals, 10 assists) in 13 games since Dec. 27. The forward has at least one point in 12 of the 13 games.
Miss: William Karlsson has three points (two goals, one assist) in 14 games since Dec. 23. The center was held without a point in 12 of the 14 games.

8. Toronto Maple Leafs (30-17-2)

Total points:111
Last week:No. 7
Hit: They are the only team in the NHL without a loss of any kind when leading entering the third period (23-0-0).
Miss: The Maple Leafs had lost four games in a row at home before defeating the Washington Capitals 6-3 on Wednesday. They have won two of their past eight at Scotiabank Arena.

9. Washington Capitals (27-17-6)

Total points: 106
Last week: No. 6
Hit: Alex Ovechkin tied Sergei Fedorov for most NHL points by a Russia-born player when he scored a goal in the second period against the Maple Leafs on Wednesday. Ovechkin has 1,179 points (644 goals, 535 assists) in 1,053 games. Fedorov had 483 goals and 696 assists in 1,248 games from 1990-2009.
Miss: The Capitals have lost seven games in a row (0-5-2) and will be without Ovechkin when they play the Calgary Flames on Feb. 1 because of an NHL-mandated one-game suspension for skipping All-Star Weekend.

10. Columbus Blue Jackets (28-17-3)

Total points: 93
Last week:No. 9
Hit:The Blue Jackets are the only team in the NHL that hasn't allowed a power-play goal in 2019. They are 23-for-23 on the penalty kill in 10 games since Dec. 31.
Miss: They lost their last two games, scoring one goal in each, before going on their mandatory five-day break before the All-Star Weekend.

11. Boston Bruins (27-17-5)

Total points: 90
Last week:No. 10
Hit: Brad Marchand has scored in the past two games and in three of the past four. The forward has three goals and three assists during a four-game point streak.
Miss: Tuukka Rask sustained a concussion in the first period of a 3-2 loss to the New York Rangers on Jan. 19.

12. Pittsburgh Penguins (26-16-6)

Total points: 75
Last week:No. 11
Hit:Phil Kessel has scored in the past two games, giving the right wing 20 goals this season, making it the 11th season in a row he has scored at least 20.
Miss: The Penguins have allowed 29 goals in seven games (3-4-0) since Jan. 6 after going 8-0-0 and allowing nine goals from Dec. 19-Jan. 4.

13. Montreal Canadiens (28-18-5)

Total points:52

Hit:Carey Price got his 20th win of the season in a 2-1 victory against the Arizona Coyotes on Wednesday. It is his ninth 20-win season, tying Hockey Hall of Fame goalies Jacques Plante and Patrick Roy for most in Canadiens history.
Miss: Jonathan Drouin has four goals in 23 games since Dec. 6. The forward scored against the Coyotes to end a nine-game goal drought.

14. Minnesota Wild (26-21-3)

Total points:28
Last week: NR
Hit: Eric Staal has nine points (four goals, five assists) in six games since Jan. 14 after he scored two goals and had an assist in a 5-2 win at the Colorado Avalanche on Wednesday. The center is second on the Wild with 17 goals and third with 36 points. Zach Parise leads Minnesota with 20 goals and 44 points.
Miss: Forward Mikael Granlund, who is second on the Wild with 41 points (12 goals, 29 assists), has not scored since Jan. 7 and has one goal in his past 25 games. He ended an eight-game point drought with two assists against the Avalanche.

15. Colorado Avalanche (22-20-8)

Total points:15
Last week: No. 14
Hit: The Avalanche are second in the NHL in goals-for in the third period (67), trailing the Flames (80).
Miss: They are 2-8-1 on the road since Dec. 4.

16. Buffalo Sabres (24-18-6)

Hit: Evan Rodrigues has a goal in three straight games, an NHL career-high goal-scoring streak for the 25-year-old forward, who had two goals in his first 39 games this season.
Miss:The Sabres, who have lost four of their past five games, are 1-for-22 on the power play in eight games since Jan. 3.
