Is there anything more exciting than an overtime goal?
Probably not.
The 2016-17 NHL season had plenty of goals scored in overtime, some coming on a breakaway or a deflection, some winning games in the World Cup of Hockey 2016 or the 2017 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Researchers and producers from NHL Network chose their top 50 overtime goals from the 2016-17 season for a special program to be broadcast during the summer. These are the ones they selected.
Here are the 50 best overtime goals of the 2016-17 NHL season:

1. Nathan MacKinnon scores on Henrik Lundqvist at World Cup

Team North America vs. Team Sweden, Sept. 21, 2016
After receiving a no-look pass from Johnny Gaudreau, MacKinnon was left alone against Lundqvist, dekeing the Team Sweden goaltender to the ice before scoring on a backhand at 4:11 of overtime for a win in the preliminary round.

2. Chris Kunitz goal sends Penguins to second straight Final

Ottawa Senators vs. Pittsburgh Penguins, May 25, 2017
Kunitz scored on a one-timer off a pass from Sidney Crosby, beating Craig Anderson at 14:51 of the second overtime in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Final to help the Penguins clinch their second consecutive trip to the Stanley Cup Final.

3. Anthony Mantha glides through Canadiens defense

Detroit Red Wings vs. Montreal Canadiens, March 21, 2017
Mantha took a pass just across the blue line and puck-handled around two Canadiens defenders before beating Al Montoya with a wrist shot 49.6 seconds into overtime.

4. Patrik Laine tops Auston Matthews in rookie showdown

Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Winnipeg Jets, Oct. 19, 2016
After Matthews was stopped on a breakaway, Laine received a pass from Dustin Byfuglien and sped up the right wing, releasing a powerful wrist shot that beat Maple Leafs goaltender Frederik Andersen over his shoulder with 2:20 left in overtime to complete his first NHL hat trick.

5. Connor McDavid beats buzzer against Panthers

Florida Panthers vs. Edmonton Oilers, Jan. 18, 2017
McDavid was sprung on a breakaway off a chip pass from Leon Draisaitl and made several dekes on goaltender James Reimer before tucking the puck into the net on a backhand with 2.6 seconds left in overtime.

6. Mika Zibanejad helps Rangers break tie in series

New York Rangers vs. Montreal Canadiens, April 20, 2017
In Game 5 of the Eastern Conference First Round, Chris Kreider's deflected shot somehow found Zibanejad at the doorstep for a one-timer that beat Carey Price 14:22 into overtime.

7. Corey Perry caps improbable comeback for Ducks

After the Ducks scored three goals in the final 3:16 of the third period to tie the game 3-3, Perry finished off the rally, working his way around goalie Cam Talbot in the slot before scoring into a wide-open net at 6:57 of the second overtime in Game 5 of the Western Conference Second Round.

8. Jean-Gabriel Pageau's fourth goal gives Senators win

New York Rangers vs. Ottawa Senators, April 29, 2017
After scoring a hat trick in regulation, Pageau beat Rangers goalie Lundqvist glove side on a 2-on-1 2:54 into the second overtime for his first four-goal game in the NHL, in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Second Round.

9. Auston Matthews, Maple Leafs win Heritage Classic

Jake Gardiner's initial pass didn't reach Matthews, but the rookie center was able to corral the puck after it hit off the end boards and sneak it past Jared Coreau with 1:20 left in overtime.

10. Jake Guentzel gets first NHL hat trick in big spot

Pittsburgh Penguins vs. Columbus Blue Jackets, April 16, 2017
Guentzel, who led the 2017 Stanley Cup Playoffs with 13 goals, got his fourth of the postseason on a backhand pass from Sidney Crosby 13:10 into overtime, beating Blue Jackets goalie Sergei Bobrovsky with a quick shot in close in Game 3 of the first round.

11. Corey Perry finishes another rally in style

The Ducks had trailed 4-1 early in the second period before rallying to force overtime in Game 3 of the first round. Perry's shot from the right wall got through traffic, hit off Flames defenseman Michael Stone and past Brian Elliott 1:30 into overtime.

12. Kris Letang scores off feed from Sidney Crosby

Pittsburgh Penguins vs. New York Islanders, Nov. 18, 2016
Letang skated down the right wall before passing back to Crosby, who faked a shot and got around Islanders forward Brock Nelson. Crosby found Letang open at the side of the net for an easy one-timer 1:24 into overtime.

13. Brandon Dubinsky shows off smooth skating

Pittsburgh Penguins vs. Columbus Blue Jackets, Feb. 17, 2017
Dubinsky received a tap pass from Cam Atkinson, skated with speed into the zone and toe-dragged around Penguins defenseman Trevor Daley before beating Matt Murray with a wrist shot into the top right corner of the net at 1:04 of overtime.

14. Sean Kuraly unlikely playoff hero for Bruins

Kuraly, who scored no goals in eight games for the Bruins in the regular season, got his second of the game at 10:19 of the second overtime by burying the rebound of Charlie McAvoy's deflected shot from the point in Game 5 of the first round.

15. Rasmus Ristolainen wins it with one-timer

Edmonton Oilers vs. Buffalo Sabres, Dec. 6, 2016
Ristolainen hit a one-timer past Talbot that knocked off the right post before going into the net for a power-play goal 57 seconds into overtime.

16. Johnny Gaudreau, Mikael Backlund play tic-tac-toe

Calgary Flames vs. Ottawa Senators, Jan. 26, 2017
After a turnover by the Senators, Gaudreau and Backlund went in alone on goaltender Mike Condon. The puck went from Backlund to Gaudreau and back to Backlund before Johnny Hockey scored into an open net with 30.2 seconds left in overtime.

17. Bobby Ryan scores vs. Penguins in Game 1

Ryan blew past Olli Maatta and went in on Marc-Andre Fleury, scoring on a backhand into the top left corner of the net at 4:59 of overtime to give the Senators a win in the Eastern Conference Final opener.

18. Mikael Granlund does it all by himself

Granlund wasted no time, skating up center ice and past three Kings players before beating Jonathan Quick with a sharp deke 12 seconds into overtime.

19. Cam Atkinson barrels into net after goal

An errant shot by Senators defenseman Erik Karlsson bounced around the boards and out to Atkinson along the left wing. He skated in on a breakaway and faked a shot before tucking the puck (and himself) into the net at 1:09 of overtime.

20. Bob Miller makes special final call

Chicago Blackhawks vs. Los Angeles Kings, April 8, 2017
Miller, in his last home game as a Kings broadcaster, was fortunate enough to get overtime. He described his final play, a 2-on-1 rush by Jeff Carter and Drew Doughty, which ended with Doughty beating Blackhawks goalie Corey Crawford 27 seconds into overtime.

21. Clarke MacArthur goal clinches trip to second round

Ottawa Senators vs. Boston Bruins, April 23, 2017
MacArthur helped the Senators advance in Game 6 of the first round with a one-timer in close past Tuukka Rask 6:30 into overtime.

22. Brent Burns puts speed on full display

San Jose Sharks vs. Anaheim Ducks, Dec. 27, 2016
Burns paid no mind to two Ducks defenders, skating between them before receiving a pass from Joe Pavelski and beating John Gibson with a quick backhand move with 2:14 left in overtime.

23. Kevin Fiala helps defeat Blackhawks in Game 3

Fiala skated through the crease and scored on a backhand past Crawford at 16:44 of overtime in to help give the Predators a 3-0 lead in the best-of-7 Western Conference First Round.

24. David Pastrnak crosses up defender

Florida Panthers vs. Boston Bruins, Dec. 5, 2016
After receiving a drop pass from David Krejci, Pastrnak made a nice juke past Panthers defenseman Mike Matheson before eluding goalie Roberto Luongo and scoring into an open net at 3:37 of overtime.

25. Wayne Simmonds takes puck from Brent Burns

San Jose Sharks vs. Philadelphia Flyers, Feb. 11, 2017
After stripping the 2017 Norris Trophy winner of the puck, Simmonds scored on a breakaway for Philadelphia at 1:04 of overtime.

26. Ben Hutton wins it on penalty shot

Arizona Coyotes vs. Vancouver Canucks, Nov. 17, 2016
Hutton skated in on Louis Domingue, faking a shot before making a nifty move to his backhand to beat the Coyotes goaltender five-hole at 2:34 of overtime.

27. Chris Kreider scores off feed from J.T. Miller

New York Rangers vs. Buffalo Sabres, Feb. 2, 2017
Zibanejad dropped a pass to Kreider, who passed to Miller in the slot. Miller gave it right back to a wide-open Kreider, who beat Sabres goalie Robin Lehner with a one-timer 1:04 into overtime.

28. Nazem Kadri outmuscles Connor McDavid

Edmonton Oilers vs. Toronto Maple Leafs, Nov. 1, 2016
Kadri fought off McDavid for a loose puck, deking past Talbot for the game-winner 12 seconds into overtime.

29. Marc-Edouard Vlasic channels Bobby Orr

Vlasic chased down a loose puck and went in on a breakaway against Gibson. A Ducks defender dove to the ice to try and knock the puck away, but Vlasic absorbed the contact, scoring while falling to the ice at 1:24 of overtime. It was reminiscent of Orr's Stanley Cup-clinching goal for the Boston Bruins in 1970, when he was airborne in front of the net.

30. David Desharnais sneaks in, gives Oilers series lead

With the first-round series tied 2-2, Desharnais streaked past Sharks forward Tomas Hertl and took a pass from Draisaitl, beating Martin Jones with a one-timer at 18:15 of overtime.

At 9:42 of overtime, Paajarvi scored in the slot off a pass from Vladimir Sobotka in Game 5 of the Western Conference First Round.

32. Joel Edmundson goal wins Game 1

After Vladimir Tarasenko made a move and barely get the puck through the crease, Edmundson skated in and put a shot past Wild goalie Devan Dubnyk to end Game 1 of the first round at 17:48 of overtime.

New York Rangers vs. Tampa Bay Lightning, March 6, 2017
Zibanejad took a pass from Ryan McDonagh and went in alone on Andrei Vasilevskiy, beating the Lightning goalie with a quick wrist shot over his glove with 1:04 remaining in overtime.

34. Melker Karlsson scores on Cam Talbot

San Jose Sharks vs. Edmonton Oilers, April 12, 2017
After taking a cross-ice pass from Pavelski, Karlsson put a wrist shot past Talbot 3:22 into overtime to help lift the Sharks in Game 1 of the first round.

Karlsson scored on a wrist shot past Coyotes goalie Mike Smith on a 2-on-0 breakaway 40 seconds into overtime.

After a turnover by Dallas, Perron got to the loose puck in front of Antti Niemi and skated around the net before tucking in the game-winner at 1:55 of overtime.

In Game 1 of the Eastern Conference First Round, Wilson knocked down a clearing attempt and sent a quick wrist shot into the top right corner of the net past Andersen 5:15 into overtime.

Sprung on a breakaway by an incredible pass by Gustav Nyquist, Athanasiou deked Dubnyk to the ice and slid the puck into the net 1:52 into overtime.

In a preseason game, Bailey scored the winner against the Rangers at 4:38 of overtime on a rebound after a shot by Dennis Seidenberg.

Kane received a pass from Jack Eichel on a 2-on-1 and flipped a shot past Jones 3:55 into overtime before falling to the ice and into the boards.
