’ netminder Roberto Luongo
backstopped his team to a 1-0 shutout in Game 1 of the Western Conference Quarterfinal meeting with the Chicago Blackhawks
on April 14 at Rogers Arena. Luongo was the difference-maker in the contest, stopping all 32 shots he faced to earn his second career playoff shutout.
At the other end of the ice, Vancouver’s offense proved relentless against the Blackhawks, scoring two goals in the first 10:23 of the first period to ensure the Game 1 victory. Just three minutes after Christopher Higgins
scored on a deflected shot, Jannik Hansen
buried a shot on a breakaway to give Vancouver an early 2-0 lead which it maintained through the end of 60 minutes.
The Canucks certainly set the tone early by gaining a 20-9 edge in hits in the first 20 minutes. They finished the contest with a 47-21 hit advantage.
It was the third straight year that Vancouver won Game 1 against the Blackhawks -- but Chicago went on to win the first two series, each in six games.
