The Vancouver Canucks claimed defenceman Mike Weaver off waivers Tuesday and assigned centre Mario Bliznak to the Vancouver Giants of the Western Hockey League.
Weaver, 29, had three goals and six assists for nine points in 39 games with the Los Angeles Kings last season. The Brampton, Ont., native also had four points (1-3) in seven games with the Manchester Monarchs of the American Hockey League.
Over a five-year NHL career, Weaver has 24 points (3-21) and 60 penalty minutes in 149 regular season games.
Bliznak, 20, was part of the Giants' Memorial Cup championship team last season. He had 22 points (8-14) in 47 regular-season games for the Giants last season. Bliznak added 12 points (6-6) in 22 WHL playoff games and six points (1-5) at the Memorial Cup.
Bliznak, a native of Trencin, Slovakia, was selected by Vancouver in the seventh round (No. 205 overall) of the 2005 NHL entry draft.
In other NHL moves on Tuesday:
-The Toronto Maple Leafs assigned goaltender Scott Clemmensen, defenceman Jay Harrison and forwards Simon Gamache, Ben Ondrus, Tony Salmelainen and Jeremy Williams to the Toronto Marlies of the AHL.
-The Dallas Stars assigned right-winger Junior Lessard to the Iowa Stars of the AHL after he cleared waivers.
-The Philadelphia Flyers assigned defenceman Alexandre Picard and forwards Boyd Kane, Ryan Potulny and Stefan Ruzicka to the Philadelphia Phantoms of the AHL.
The Flyers also assigned Denis Gauthier to the Phantoms after the veteran defenceman cleared waivers.
He had four assists and 45 penalty minutes in 43 regular season games for the Flyers last season.
-Minnesota Wild forward Pavol Demitra will serve as team captain for the month of October.
The Wild will rotate the team captaincy on a monthly basis. Forwards Brian Rolston and Wes Walz will serve as permanent alternate captains.
The Wild also assigned defenceman Erik Reitz to the Houston Aeros of the AHL.
