Fantasy keeper / dynasty league rankings for 2019-20

Hughes brothers, Kakko among 15 best; Canucks have three in first 20; Hart leads goalies; top under-23 players at start of next season

by Rob Reese @NHLReese / Fantasy Editor's fantasy hockey rankings for keeper and dynasty leagues are based on past production and future potential in long-term leagues. Fantasy owners in long-term formats should prioritize players who will be under 23 years old at the start of next season. For more fantasy coverage, visit

-- New Jersey Devils center Jack Hughes is among the 10 most valuable players for keeper and dynasty leagues after being selected with the No. 1 pick in the 2019 NHL Draft. He scored 190 points (60 goals, 130 assists) in two seasons with USA Hockey's National Team Development Program, surpassing Arizona Coyotes forward Clayton Keller (189 points from 2014-16) for the most in program history. With the acquisition of valuable defenseman P.K. Subban and a healthy Taylor Hall, Hughes could exceed 60 points in his rookie season. Devils center Nico Hischier is also ranked among the top 25 and has standalone value on a separate line from Hughes.

-- New York Rangers wing Kaapo Kakko is just outside the top 10 after being selected with the No. 2 pick in the draft. He scored 22 goals in 45 games this season for HC TPS in Liiga, the top men's professional hockey league in Finland, setting a record for under-18 players; center Aleksander Barkov (Florida Panthers) had 21 goals for Tappara in 2012-13. Kakko could lead all rookies in goals if he skates on a line with center Mika Zibanejad and left wing Chris Kreider.

-- The Colorado Avalanche have three defensemen in the top 100 for keeper and dynasty leagues: Cale Makar , Bowen Byram and Samuel Girard .  Makar should be a first-round target in keeper and dynasty leagues after making an immediate impact in the 2019 Stanley Cup Playoffs with six points (one goal, five assists) in 10 games. Makar should eventually takeover top power-play duties from Tyson Barrie, a potential 2020 unrestricted free agent, bringing long-term exposure to elite forwards Nathan MacKinnon and Mikko Rantanen, who's among the keeper and dynasty top five.

-- Vancouver Canucks defenseman Quinn Hughes can be drafted in the late first or early second round of most keeper and dynasty leagues. He had three assists, two on the power play, in five games and skated 21:42 for the Canucks on April 6. Hughes should play big minutes in his rookie season and bring power-play exposure to valuable young forwards Elias Pettersson and Brock Boeser. Those three Canucks players are in the top 20 for keeper and dynasty leagues.

-- Fantasy owners should keep an eye on New York Rangers defenseman prospect Adam Fox, who is expected to forego his senior year at Harvard University of the NCAA. Fox had 48 points (nine goals, 39 assists) in 33 games for Harvard and should compete for a roster spot in training camp. New York is among the most-improved teams this offseason and has Fox, Kakko, wing prospect Vitali Kravtsov and center Filip Chytil ranked among the top 100 players for keeper and dynasty leagues.

-- Philadelphia Flyers goalie Carter Hart is among the 10 best players in keeper and dynasty formats after going 16-13-1 with a .917 save percentage in 31 games. Hart should see additional starts next season with veteran Brian Elliott, whom the Flyers re-signed to a one-year contract June 26, expected to be the backup. If the Flyers return to playoff form under new coach Alain Vigneault, Hart could exceed 30 wins with an even higher ceiling down the road.

-- Devils goalie Mackenzie Blackwood is second at the position after the trade for Subban and selection of Hughes. The Devils are the most-improved fantasy team so far this offseason and could compete for a postseason spot in the Eastern Conference. Blackwood was 10-10-0, with a .918 SV% and two shutouts this season and could capture the starting job over veteran Cory Schneider.

-- Washington Capitals goalie Ilya Samsonov is just outside the top 50 after his first season in North America, going 20-14-2 with a .898 SV% and three shutouts in 37 games for Hershey of the American Hockey League. Fantasy owners should be encouraged that Samsonov has adjusted to the smaller ice surface and could see time with the Capitals soon.

NOTE: Goalies Thatcher Demko (Canucks) and Igor Shestyorkin (Rangers), each 23 years old, are not eligible for this list.
