NEW YORK, N.Y. - Star goalie Carey Price again exited with a lower-body injury, but Devante Smith-Pelly and Alex Galchenyuk scored in the opening 1:29 of the third period and the Montreal Canadiens beat the New York Rangers 5-1 Wednesday night in a matchup of the top two teams in the Eastern Conference.
Smith-Pelley had two goals. Sven Andrighetto and Max Pacioretty also scored for the Canadiens, who have handed the Rangers (16-4-2) two of their four losses in regulation this season.
Price stopped 22 shots in the first two periods and was replaced at the start of the third by Mike Condon in a 2-1 game. After it was over, coach Michel Therrien said Price was sidelined by the same injury that kept him out for eight games earlier this month. This was his third game back.
Price was the NHL MVP and Vezina Trophy winner last season as the league's top goalie.
PENGUINS 4, BLUES 3, OT
PITTSBURGH (AP) ? Evgeni Malkin scored 1:03 into overtime and Sidney Crosby broke out with two goals to lift Pittsburgh over St. Louis.
Malkin took a lead pass from Phil Kessel and beat goaltender Jake Allen on the backhand for his eighth of the season and fifth game-winner.
Crosby scored his fourth and fifth of the season and now has a goal against every NHL team ??? he had five assists in 10 career meetings against St. Louis. It was also the first time Crosby scored two regular-season goals since February, a span of 47 games.
Ben Lovejoy also scored to help the Penguins finish 3-1 during a four-game homestand after dropping three of their previous four.
Marc-Andre Fleury made 29 saves for his 11th win of the season.
Alex Pietrangelo tied the game 3-3 with 5:41 left in the third period. St. Louis also got goals from Paul Stastny and Robby Fabbri.
PREDATORS 3, SABRES 2
BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) ??? Mike Fisher ended Nashville's franchise-record scoring drought in the first period and the Predators beat Buffalo to snap a three-game losing streak.
Fisher ended the Predators' goalless skid at 227:39, and Craig Smith and Cody Hodgson also scored. Carter Hutton made 30 saves.
The Predators were outscored 11-0 over the first three games of this five-game trip, which ends Friday in Philadelphia. They hadn't scored since the second period of a 3-2 win over the Anaheim Ducks on Nov. 17.
Evander Kane and Jack Eichel scored for the Sabres.
The loss was Buffalo's sixth straight, and they've only scored seven goals and collected two points in that time.
Over the first two periods, Buffalo outshot Nashville 25-11 but trailed 3-0.
BRUINS 3, RED WINGS 2, OT
DETROIT (AP) ??? Frank Vatrano scored his second goal of the game at 3:32 of overtime, giving Boston a victory over Detroit.
Vatrano deflected Colin Miller's shot past Petr Mrazek for his third NHL goal. Miller scored the tying goal with 1:44 left in the third period, and Boston won its sixth straight game against the Red Wings.
Boston is 2-1 in overtime, while Detroit fell to 4-3.
Vatrano opened the scoring at 7:11 of the first period when his shot from the left point beat Mrazek.
At 2:26 of the second, Pavel Datsyuk eluded Boston defenceman Torey Krug and shot the puck into the top left corner of the net. It was Datsyuk's 300th career goal.
CAPITALS 5, JETS 3
WASHINGTON (AP) ??? Evgeny Kuznetsov had one goal and two assists and Dmitry Orlov broke a tie late in the second period to lift Washington over Winnipeg for its third straight win.
Orlov's third-period goal Monday night gave the Capitals a 1-0 victory over Edmonton. In this game, his slap shot with 3:38 left in the second period beat Winnipeg goalie Michael Hutchinson and snapped a 3-3 tie.
Orlov now has scored goals in three straight games after going without one in his first 18 contests. Both of his tie-breaking goals in the last two games came on left-handed slap-shots.
Justin Williams, Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom also scored for Washington.
Tyler Myers, Andrew Ladd and Mathieu Perreault scored for Winnipeg.
HURRICANES 4, OILERS 1
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) ????????? Elias Lindholm scored the go-ahead goal midway through the second period, Cam Ward made 30 saves and Carolina beat Edmonton.
Jordan Staal and Jeff Skinner also scored for Carolina. Andrej Nestrasil, who had a goal and an assist, scored an empty-netter with 51 seconds left as Justin Faulk picked up his second assist of the night.
Benoit Pouliot scored for the Oilers, the 100th goal of his career, and Anders Nelson stopped 23 shots.
Edmonton forward Nail Yakupov, who got his 100th career point in the first period, left with an apparent lower-body injury during the second and did not return.
ISLANDERS 3, FLYERS 1
Jaroslav Halak made 17 saves and Kyle Okposo put New York ahead early in the second period to beat Philadelphia.
Casey Cizikas and Frans Nielsen also scored and New York improved to 11-8-3.
The win snapped the Islanders' two-game losing streak.
Steve Mason made 33 saves and Claude Giroux scored the Flyers' lone goal.
Philadelphia has lost four of five and fell to 7-10-5.
The first of five meetings this season between Philadelphia and New York was a chippy affair. There were post-whistle scrums seemingly after every whistle, and tempers boiled over in the second period when Nick Leddy fought Giroux.
Seven minutes after the Leddy-Giroux fight, Matt Martin squared off with Wayne Simmonds.

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) ????????? Matt Calvert scored the tiebreaking goal late in the second period and Sergei Bobrovsky made 27 saves to help Columbus beat New Jersey.
William Karlsson also scored for Columbus, and Bobrovsky extended his mastery of New Jersey. He has won his last four starts against the Devils.
Adam Henrique scored for New Jersey, which has lost three of four.
