WASHINGTON - David Clarkson scored in the fourth round of the shootout, after Johan Hedberg made a pad save on Nicklas Backstrom, and the New Jersey Devils rallied for a 3-2 victory over the Washington Capitals on Saturday night.

Zach Parise also scored for the Devils in the shootout, and Alex Ovechkin connected for Washington.

New Jersey got goals from Petr Sykora and Ryan Carter in the second period to erase a 2-0 deficit. The Devils have won three of four games.

Troy Brouwer and Jason Chimera scored for the Capitals in the first.

Washington coach Bruce Boudreau was denied in his first try at his 200th NHL victory.


BOSTON (AP) ? Tyler Seguin scored twice and had an assist as Boston increased its season-high winning streak to five with a victory over Buffalo.

Brad Marchand had a goal and two assists, Rich Peverley and Chris Kelly had a goal and an assist each, and Zdeno Chara assisted on two goals for Boston (8-7), which has a winning record for the first time this season.

The Bruins, who got goals 16 seconds apart from Seguin and Nathan Horton in the second period, have scored 30 goals during their longest streak since winning seven straight last spring.

Tim Thomas made 21 saves as the Bruins held the Sabres to 23 shots and ended Buffalo's four-game winning streak.

Ryan Miller stopped 19 of 22 shots before being pulled after the second period.

Seguin has 11 goals, matching his total from last season when he was a rookie with the Stanley Cup champion Bruins.


DETROIT (AP) ??? Johan Franzen, Darren Helm and Brad Stuart scored in the third period, and Detroit beat Dallas.

With the game tied at 2, Valtteri Filppula drove to the net from the left. After his backhanded attempt, Franzen was on the opposite side to poke the puck across the goal line.

Helm scored by redirecting a nice pass from Jiri Hudler with 10:41 remaining, and Stuart added another goal 73 seconds later.

The Red Wings have won four straight, part of a streaky start to their season. They won their first five games before an 0-5-1 stretch preceded this run.

Dallas has lost two in a row after an 11-3 start.

Loui Eriksson and Brenden Morrow scored for the Stars. Niklas Kronwall and Ian White added goals for Detroit.

The Red Wings outshot the Stars 40-27.


COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) ??? Rookie Ryan Johansen, a healthy scratch in the previous game, had his first two-goal effort, and Steve Mason made with 35 saves to help struggling Columbus end a three-game losing skid.

Johansen has scored the winning goal in all three of Columbus' victories.

The Jets have lost five straight (0-3-2).

Mason, near the bottom among NHL goalies with a 3.88 goals-against average, was solid all night. He made many of his best saves in the third period as the Jets turned up the pressure.

Mark Stuart scored a short-handed goal for the Jets, ending Mason's shutout bid with 3:45 left.


RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) ??? Eric Staal scored for the first time in a month and Carolina beat Pittsburgh.

Staal converted a rebound with 4:34 remaining, smacking the puck past Brent Johnson to give the Hurricanes a 4-3 lead after they wasted a three-goal advantage. It was Staal's fourth goal of the season and first since Oct. 18.

Chad LaRose added a breakaway score with 2:30 left.

Jeff Skinner had a goal and two assists, and Tuomo Ruutu had two goals for the Hurricanes, who led 3-0 lead after two periods and snapped a four-game slide. Cam Ward had 37 saves.

Jordan Staal, Eric's brother, scored two goals for Pittsburgh, and Chris Kunitz added another to help the Penguins rally in the third. Johnson made 21 stops in place of No. 1 goalie Marc-Andre Fleury.

Pittsburgh dropped to 7-2-1 in its last 10 games.


ST. LOUIS (AP) ????????? Brian Elliott stopped 19 shots, and defenceman Kris Russell scored in his St. Louis debut to lead the Blues over Tampa Bay.

St. Louis improved to 5-0-1 in its last six home games. The Blues have earned five points in three games under new coach Ken Hitchcock, who replaced Davis Payne on Sunday.

Tampa Bay had a three-game winning streak snapped.

Russell, acquired from the Columbus Blue Jackets on Friday, netted his third goal of the season late in the first period. Kevin Shattenkirk added a goal, and T.J. Oshie scored a short-handed tally.


NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) ????????? Max Pacioretty scored 2:31 into overtime to lift Montreal over Nashville in front of a sellout crowd.

David Desharnais also scored for Montreal and assisted on the game-winner.

Shea Weber had the lone goal for the Predators.

Desharnais scored the only goal of the first period with 6:11 remaining. As goalie Pekka Rinne dove to his right side, Desharnais skated into the crease and backhanded the puck into the open side of the net.

Weber tied it at 3:20 of the second period with a short-handed goal.

Peter Budaj made 25 saves, and Rinne stopped 23 shots.


TORONTO (AP) ????????? Craig Anderson made 31 saves, Nick Foligno scored two goals and Ottawa snapped its five-game losing streak by beating Toronto.

Sergei Gonchar, Zack Smith and Milan Michalek added goals for Ottawa, which continues its six-game road trip with a swing through Western Canada next week. The Senators were 0-4-1 in their previous five games.

Tyler Bozak and Joffrey Lupul scored for Toronto.
