NEW YORK (AP) - Dan Girardi and Brandon Dubinsky scored 9 seconds apart midway through the third period and the New York Rangers went on to rout the Carolina Hurricanes 5-1 on Friday night for their sixth straight win.
Girardi snapped a wrist shot from the top of the right circle past goalie Cam Ward, off a perfect cross-ice pass from Brad Richards at 10:47 The power-play goal, with Eric Staal in the penalty box for high-sticking Girardi, snapped a 1-1 tie.
Dubinsky scored his first goal of the season off the ensuing faceoff. Sean Avery also scored his first goal of the season for the Rangers (9-3-3), who haven't lost since they squandered a three-goal, third- period lead against Ottawa on Oct. 29. The Hurricanes (5-8-3) lost their fourth straight and for the fifth time in six games.
Alexei Ponikarovsky scored Carolina's lone goal at 16:22 of the second.
NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Jason Chimera scored a short-handed goal 2:27 into the third period and Marcus Johansson added an insurance tally eight minutes later, leading Washington over New Jersey.
The Capitals (10-4) snapped a two-game losing streak and broke a three-game winning run for the Devils (7-6-1). The teams will meet again Saturday night in Washington, and the Capitals will be looking for their sixth win in seven games over New Jersey.
Devils rookie defenseman Adam Larsson, who turns 19 on Saturday, scored his first NHL goal in the first period to give New Jersey a 1-0 lead.
The Devils remained in front until Alex Ovechkin tied it with just under three minutes left in the second period. It was Ovechkin's seventh goal of the season and his 10th in 23 career games against New Jersey.
Tomas Vokoun stopped 32 shots and earned his eighth win.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - James Neal scored two power-play goals against the team that traded him nine months ago and led Pittsburgh past Dallas.
Neal netted his 10th and 11th goals of the season, and Matt Cooke scored on a penalty shot in the third period as Pittsburgh won for the seventh time in nine games.
Eric Nystrom had a goal in his fifth consecutive game for Dallas, which had a four-game winning streak snapped.
The game matched the teams with the most points in their respective conferences. Pittsburgh is on top in the East, and Dallas leads the West.
BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Jhonas Enroth made 36 saves, and Derek Roy had a goal and two assists for Buffalo in a win over Ottawa.
Matt Ellis, Jordan Leopold, Luke Adam, and Ville Leino also scored for the Sabres (10-5), who won their fourth straight after a 1-4 stretch. It was Buffalo's eighth win in nine meetings with Ottawa.
Enroth, making his fifth start of the season and third in four games, was solid throughout.
Drew Stafford added three assists for the Sabres.
Sergei Gonchar scored for slumping Ottawa (7-9-1), which dropped to 0-4-1 since a six-game winning streak. Craig Anderson let in two goals on six shots over the first 2 1/2 minutes of the game before being pulled. Alex Auld finished with 12 saves in relief.
DETROIT (AP) - Jimmy Howard made 24 saves, and Drew Miller, Niklas Kronwall and Valtteri Filppula scored in Detroit's victory against Edmonton.
Howard has two shutouts in a week and three this season, tying him for the NHL lead with Nashville's Pekka Rinne and Jonathan Quick of the Los Angeles Kings.
Edmonton's Nikolai Khabibulin gave up a season-high three goals and made 27 saves. He entered the game with a 7-0-2 record and an NHL-low 0.98 goals-against average. Detroit has won three straight after a six-game losing streak.
The Northwest Division-leading Oilers were shut out for the first time this season. They have lost three of four after winning six straight.
