WASHINGTON (AP) -Alex Ovechkin scored his NHL-leading 39th goal and had an assist, and the Washington Capitals extended their team-record winning streak at 13 with a 5-2 victory over the Atlanta Thrashers on Friday night.
Nicklas Backstrom, Alexander Semin, Jason Chimera and Mike Green also scored for the Capitals, who haven't lost since Jan. 12 at Tampa Bay.
Tobias Enstrom and Rich Peverley scored for the Thrashers, playing a day after trading scoring star Ilya Kovalchuk to New Jersey.
The 13-game winning streak is the NHL's longest since New Jersey won 13 in 2001. The last time a team had a longer streak was when Pittsburgh set the NHL record with 17 in a row from March 9-April 10, 1993.
The Capitals also matched the franchise record of 10 consecutive home victories in a half-empty Verizon Center. The game was announced as a sellout, but many fans stayed home as a snowstorm hit the nation's capital.
NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Jay Pandolfo capped a three-goal outburst in the final 3:04 and the New Jersey Devils welcomed Ilya Kovalchuk by rallying for stunning victory.
Dean McAmmond, Travis Zajac and Pandolfo scored in the wild finish to turn a disappointing debut for Kovalchuk into a wild celebration. The explosive Kovalchuk, acquired from Atlanta on Thursday in a blockbuster five-player deal, finished with two assists, but really wasn't much of a factor in the stunning comeback.
Dainius Zubrus had a first-period goal for New Jersey. Tomas Kaberle, Lee Stempniak and Rickard Wallin scored in the second period for Toronto.
CHICAGO (AP) - Robert Lang and defenseman Adrian Aucoin scored in the shootout to give Phoenix its season-high sixth straight victory.
Phoenix backup goalie Jason LaBarbera made 28 saves through overtime, then stopped two of three Blackhawks in the shootout.
Radim Vrbata scored late in the second period for the Coyotes, whose streak is their longest since they won seven in a row midway through the 2006-07 season. Phoenix is 9-2-0 in its last 11 games. Colin Fraser scored for the Blackhawks, who have lost three straight for the first time this season.
BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Jussi Jokinen snapped a third-period tie and added an assist, and backup Manny Legace made 28 saves for Carolina.
Eric Staal had a goal and assist, and Aaron Ward and Tom Kostopoulos also scored for Carolina. Legace started in place of Cam Ward, who was sent home for treatment on an upper-body injury. The Hurricanes have won five of their last seven games.
Drew Stafford scored twice, Andrej Sekera had a goal and two assists, and Miller made 23 saves for Buffalo.
SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) - Ales Kotalik and Mark Giordano scored, and Mikka Kiprusoff made 12 saves for Calgary.
Calgary won for just the fourth time in its past 16 games and ended a four-game road losing streak. Florida has lost three of its last four games.
Dennis Seidenberg scored for Florida, and Tomas Vokoun stopped 38 shots. The Panthers had a season-low 13 shot on goal.
