NHL Buzz: Jarry, Petry each return for Penguins

Pittsburgh Penguins

Tristan Jarry started in goal for the Penguins against the Ottawa Senators on Friday.
The goalie hadn't played since the 2023 Discover NHL Winter Classic against the Boston Bruins at Fenway Park in Boston on Jan. 2, when he sustained a lower-body injury in the first period. Jarry practiced for the first time Tuesday.
Without Jarry, Pittsburgh has allowed at least four goals in four of its past seven games (3-3-1). Casey DeSmith has allowed 19 goals on 165 shots (.885 save percentage) in six starts during that stretch, including five goals on 40 shots in a 5-4 overtime loss at Ottawa on Wednesday.
Jarry is 15-5-4 with a 2.75 goals-against average and .918 save percentage in 25 games this season. Before being injured Jan. 2, he had lost three straight starts (0-2-1) after going 11-0-2 since Nov. 12.
Defenseman Jeff Petry also returned Friday; he had been out since Dec. 10 with an upper-body injury. Forward Ryan Poehling did not play after being a game-time decisions; he has not played since Dec. 30 because of an upper-body injury.
To make room on the roster for Jarry and Petry, who were each activated from injured reserve, goalie

and defenseman
Taylor Fedun
were re-assigned to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League.
Forward Kasperi Kapanen (lower body) did not participate in morning skate and is week to week.
Defenseman Kris Letang (lower body) was placed on long-term injured reserve retroactive to Dec. 28, and defenseman Jan Rutta (upper body) was placed on injured reserve retroactive to Jan. 14.-- Wes Crosby

Colorado Avalanche

Cale Makar is expected to miss his second straight game for the Avalanche when they visit the Vancouver Canucks on Friday (10 p.m. ET; TVAS, SNP, ALT, ESPN+, SN NOW).
The defenseman, who took part in the morning skate Friday, did not play in a 4-1 win against the Calgary Flames on Wednesday because of an undisclosed injury. He had two goals and an assist in 19:39 of ice time in a 6-3 win against the Detroit Red Wings on Monday, when Colorado coach Jared Bednar said the injury occurred. Bednar also said it's to be determined if there's concern for the long term.
The Avalanche played with 11 forwards and seven defensemen against the Flames without Makar, their leader in average time on ice (27:09). Jacob MacDonald was the seventh defenseman.
"It's obviously impossible to replace Cale, the best [defenseman] in the world," Avalanche forward Mikko Rantanen said after the game Wednesday. "I think we came together as a team. Just got to defend, that's what we have to focus on. The goals are going to come."
Makar was on a six-game point streak (four goals, five assists). His 13 goals are tied with Rasmus Dahlin of the Buffalo Sabres for second in the NHL at the position (Erik Karlsson, San Jose Sharks, 14), and he's fifth with 43 points. -- Aaron Vickers

Boston Bruins

Brandon Carlo could be out for the Bruins in their game against the San Jose Sharks on Sunday.
The defenseman sustained a lower-body injury in the second period of a 3-1 win at the New York Rangers on Thursday.
"We're going to be careful," Boston coach Jim Montgomery said. "We've got a real good extra defenseman in

and if [Carlo] is not ready to go Sunday, we've got a little luxury of getting Zboril into games. We'll see when we get home and we get our doctors on him."
Carlo has eight points (one goal, seven assists) averaging 18:34 of ice time in 41 games this season.
