NHL announces 2022-23 All-Rookie Team

NASHVILLE -- The National Hockey League announced today the 2022-23 NHL All-Rookie Team, including the three players voted as finalists for the Calder Memorial Trophy as the League's top rookie: forward Matty Beniers of the Seattle Kraken, defenseman Owen Power of the Buffalo Sabres and goaltender Stuart Skinner of the Edmonton Oilers.

Also named to the 2023-23 NHL All-Rookie Team are forwards Wyatt Johnston of the Dallas Stars and Matias Maccelli of the Arizona Coyotes as well as defenseman Jake Sanderson of the Ottawa Senators.

Voting was conducted by the Professional Hockey Writers Association at the conclusion of the regular season.

Following is a summary of each NHL All-Rookie Team member's outstanding campaign:

GOALTENDER

Stuart Skinner, Edmonton Oilers

Skinner, a third-round choice (78th overall) in the 2017 NHL Draft, topped rookie goaltenders in wins (29) and games played (50) while ranking second among qualifying rookies (minimum: 25 GP) in goals-against average (2.75) and save percentage (.914). His 29 victories set an Edmonton rookie record, one ahead of Grant Fuhr's 28 in 1981-82 (48 GP), and were the most by a rookie on any team since Matt Murray's 32 in 2016-17 (49 GP w/ PIT). The 24-year-old Skinner, who in February became the second rookie netminder in Oilers history to play in the All-Star Game (following Fuhr in 1982), is the first Edmonton goaltender to be named to the All-Rookie Team, which first was presented in 1982-83, and the franchise's first representative at any position since forward Connor McDavid in 2015-16.

DEFENSEMEN (in alphabetical order)

Owen Power, Buffalo Sabres

Power, the No. 1 overall pick from the 2021 NHL Draft, paced rookie defensemen with 4-31-35 across 79 contests. He finished among the top rookies - forwards and defensemen - in assists (3rd; 31), plus/minus (t-3rd; +10), power-play assists (4th; 8), shots on goal (7th; 130) and power-play points (t-9th; 8). Power also led all rookies in both average (23:48) and total (1,880:20) time on ice, the fifth-highest and seventh-highest figures, respectively, since the statistics began being recorded in 1997-98 (minimum: 15 GP). The 20-year-old Power is Buffalo's first All-Rookie Team selection since forward Victor Olofsson in 2019-20 and the fifth Sabres defenseman to make the list, following Rasmus Dahlin (2018-19), Tyler Myers (2009-10), Calle Johansson (1987-88) and Phil Housley (1982-83).

Jake Sanderson, Ottawa Senators

Sanderson, the fifth overall selection from the 2020 NHL Draft, ranked second among rookie defensemen with 4-28-32 in 77 appearances. His 28 assists and 32 points both were the third-most in Senators history by a rookie blueliner, behind only Andrej Meszaros (10-29-39 in 2005-06) and Karel Rachunek (3-30-33 in 2000-01). Sanderson also placed among the leading 2022-23 rookies, forwards and defensemen, in total time on ice (2nd; 1,687:52), average time on ice (2nd; 21:55), power-play assists (2nd; 15), power-play points (2nd; 17), assists (4th; 28) and shots on goal (5th; 132). The 20-year-old Sanderson is Ottawa's first All-Rookie Team representative since forward Josh Norris in 2020-21 and the third Senators defenseman to receive the honor, after Meszaros (2005-06) and Sami Salo (1998-99).

FORWARDS (in alphabetical order)

Matty Beniers, Seattle Kraken

Beniers, the first draft pick in Seattle history (No. 2 overall in 2021), led rookies with 24-33-57 in 80 games to help the Kraken post the largest win (+19) and point (+40) improvements by an NHL franchise from its first to second season. He also topped rookies in multi-point performances (18), shooting percentage (minimum: 80 S; 16.2%), plus/minus (1st; +14) and goals (t 1st; 24) while finishing among the top 10 in assists (2nd; 33), game-winning goals (2nd; 4), shots on goal (4th; 148), power-play points (6th; 10), power-play goals (t-6th; 4) and power-play assists (8th; 6). The 20-year-old Beniers - a unanimous selection - is the third player to make the All-Rookie Team within his franchise's first two NHL seasons, following defenseman Rostislav Klesla (2001-02 w/ CBJ) and forward Paul Kariya (1994-95 w/ ANA).

Wyatt Johnston, Dallas Stars

Johnston, who began his career by scoring in his NHL debut (Oct. 13 at NSH), shared first place among rookies with 24 total goals - a number reached by only one other Stars rookie since the franchise relocated to Dallas in 1993-94 (James Neal: 24 G in 2008-09). Johnston, who played in all 82 games, also finished among the 2022-23 rookie leaders in shots on goal (2nd; 160), game-winning goals (t-3rd; 3), points (4th; 41), shooting percentage (4th, minimum: 80 S; 15.0%), plus/minus (t-9th; +6), power-play goals (t-9th; 3), power-play points (13th; 7) and assists (t-13th; 17). The 20-year-old Johnston, the 23rd overall choice from the 2021 NHL Draft, is the third forward in Stars/North Stars history selected to the All-Rookie Team, joining Jason Robertson (2020-21) and Mike Modano (1989-90).

Matias Maccelli, Arizona Coyotes

Maccelli, a fourth-round pick (98th overall) from the 2019 NHL Draft, finished second among rookies with 11-38-49 despite missing 18 of 82 games (64 GP). He became the fourth player in franchise history to finish among the top two in rookie scoring, following Clayton Keller (2nd, 2017-18), Teemu Selanne (1st, 1992-93) and Dale Hawerchuk (1st, 1981-82). Maccelli, who became the first Coyotes/Jets player to pace rookies in assists (38), also placed among the 2022-23 rookie leaders in points per game (1st, minimum: 10 GP; 0.77), power-play assists (3rd; 12), power-play points (4th; 13) and goals (14th; 11). The 22-year-old Maccelli is the second Coyotes player (at any position) to be named to the All-Rookie Team since the franchise relocated to Arizona in 1996-97, following Keller in 2017-18.
