Newswire: 'Canes claim Nodl, demote Brett Sutter

The Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday team claimed right wing Andreas Nodl on waivers from Philadelphia.
Nodl, 24, has played in 12 games with the Flyers this season, earning one assist while averaging 10:17 of ice time. The Vienna, Austria, native scored 11 goals and 22 points in 67 games with Philadelphia in 2010-11, his first full NHL season. In 126 career regular-season games, all with the Flyers, Nodl has 12 goals, 28 points and 20 penalty minutes.

 "This is a young player that skates really well," Carolina president and GM Jim Rutherford said in a statement. "He has a skill level that gives us a little more depth among our top 12 forwards."
To make room on the roster, the 'Canes demoted forward Brett Sutter to their AHL affiliate, the Charlotte Checkers.

Sutter, 24, had played in each of Carolina’s four games after being recalled from Charlotte on Nov. 21, and has three assists in eight games this season with the Hurricanes. He has two goals and four points in 14 games this season with the Checkers, who named him captain before the start of the season. He is the son of former NHL player and Calgary GM Darryl Sutter.

Flyers call up Schenn and Marshall -- The Flyers recalled center Brayden Schenn and defenseman Kevin Marshall from the AHL Adirondack Phantoms.

Schenn, 20, has six goals and six assists for 12 points in seven appearances with the Phantoms this season.  With the Flyers, he has gone scoreless with seven shots on goal in four games while playing an average of 14:52 per game.

Marshall, 22, has appeared in two games for the Flyers this season.  He made his NHL debut on Nov. 21 vs. Carolina, recording two hits and two blocked shots.  He has scored one goal in 16 games for the Phantoms this season.  The Flyers selected Marshall in the second round (No. 41) in the 2007 NHL Draft.
Oilers recall O'Marra -- The Edmonton Oilers recalled center Ryan O'Marra from the Oklahoma City Barons of the American Hockey League.

O'Marra, 23, has four goals, eight points and 40 PIM in played 20 games this season with the Barons. He had a goal and four assists in 21 games with the Oilers last season.

The New York Islanders drafted O'Marra with the 15th pick in the 2005 NHL Draft. Edmonton acquired him in a deadline day deal that sent Ryan Smyth to the Isles in 2007.

Penguins call up two defensemen -- The Pittsburgh Penguins recalled defensemen Alexandre Picard and Robert Bortuzzo from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League.

Picard, 26, played in six games for Pittsburgh earlier this month, going scoreless with a plus-4 rating while averaging 12:41 of ice time.

The 6-foot-3, 215-pounder was signed by Pittsburgh as an unrestricted free agent on July 5. Picard has spent the majority of the season with WBS, where he has a goal and four assists in 12 games. His plus-9 rating is tied for the team lead.

Picard has appeared in 242 NHL regular-season games for the Philadelphia Flyers, Tampa Bay Lightning, Ottawa Senators, Carolina Hurricanes, Montreal Canadiens and Penguins, collecting 19 goals, 46 assists and 65 points.

Bortuzzo, 22, made his NHL debut with Pittsburgh on Nov. 5 at Los Angeles, going scoreless with two penalty minutes in 10:38 of ice time. He has a goal, two assists and a plus-5 rating in 11 games this season for WBS after missing all of training camp and the beginning of the season while rehabbing from an injury suffered at the team’s rookie camp.

The native of Thunder Bay, Ont., was drafted by Pittsburgh in the third round (No. 78) of the 2007 NHL Draft. Bortuzzo has seven goals, 41 points and a plus-46 rating in 165 career regular-season games with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

Blues recall Fairchild -- St. Louis recalled defenseman Cade Fairchild from its AHL affiliate, the Peoria Rivermen. 

Fairchild, 21, has appeared in 19 games with the Rivermen this season, going 2-5-7 with a plus-16 rating.  The 5-foot-11, 175-pound defenseman spent the last four years at the University of Minnesota where he had 21 goals and 93 points in 149 games.

The Blues selected the Duluth, Minn., native in the fourth round (No. 96) of the 2007 NHL Draft.
Stars demote Wathier -- The Dallas Stars assigned forward Francis Wathier to the Texas Stars, their primary affiliate in the American Hockey League.

Wathier was recalled on Nov. 27 and was a healthy scratch in Monday night's game at Colorado. Wathier has skated in 19 games for the Texas Stars this season, posting five goals and seven assists for 12 points with a team-best plus-3 rating. The 6-4, 218-pound forward has gone scoreless in his eight career games with Dallas, which chose him in the sixth round (No. 185) of the 2003 NHL Draft.

Sabres call up Szczechura -- The injury-riddled Buffalo Sabres recalled forward Paul Szczechura from Americans of the American Hockey League.

Szczechura, 26, joins the Sabres on his second recall of the season after making his debut on Saturday, when he had a pair of assists in a 5-1 victory against Washington. The Brantford, Ont., native signed with Buffalo as a free agent this summer and has a goal and seven points in nine games with Rochester.

In 223 career AHL games, Szczechura has 63 goals and 155 points with Rochester, Norfolk and the Iowa Stars.

Sharks send Braun to AHL -- San Jose reassigned defenseman Justin Braun to the AHL Worcester Sharks.

Braun had one assist in 10 games with San Jose this season, and has 2 goals and 12 points in 38 career NHL games. The Sharks took Braun in the seventh round (No. 201) of the 2007 NHL Draft.
