NYR@VAN: Miller nets wraparound for OT winner

VANCOUVER --J.T. Miller scored his second goal of the game at 2:22 of overtime, and the Vancouver Canucks rallied for a 3-2 win against the New York Rangers at Rogers Arena on Tuesday.

Miller won it on a wraparound after being denied on a breakaway by Igor Shesterkin.
"Had a lot of time and he made a pretty sour move and I got lucky it came back to me," Miller said. "I just tried to get it in there off of something and got lucky."
Vasily Podkolzin tied it in the third period, and Thatcher Demko made 23 saves for the Canucks (4-5-1), who were 0-for-6 on the power play and had lost three in a row.
"It's a test of the will and camaraderie in the room," Demko said. "Pucks haven't been going in for us easily last couple games, but we played really hard tonight regardless, and it's easy to kind of stray away from that when things aren't going your way.
"But it was actually quite the opposite in the third. Guys are picking each other up and working hard for each other and it ended up paying off."

Artemi Panarin had a goal and an assist, and Adam Fox had two assists for the Rangers (6-2-2), who won their previous five on the road. Shesterkin made 33 saves.
"We made a couple mistakes, they obviously had a push back and scored on their chances in the third," center Mika Zibanejad said. "I thought we did a pretty god job up until the third, but it wasn't a full 60 minutes and that's why we sit here with the loss."
Zibanejad gave New York a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal at 2:33 of the second period, one-touching a cross-ice backdoor pass from Panarin off the rush.
The Rangers killed three straight penalties before Panarin also scored on the power play at 13:13 with a one-timer from the point that deflected off Canucks defenseman Tucker Poolman's stick to make it 2-0.
"[The penalty kill] was awesome," New York coach Gerard Gallant said. "They did a great job. Back-to-back-to-back, and that was huge for our group."
Miller started Vancouver's rally at 1:29 of the third period when he converted a backdoor pass from Conor Garland to make it 2-1.
Podkolzin tied it 2-2 with a one-timer from Garland at 5:19.

The Canucks scored once in each of their previous two games, home losses against the Philadelphia Flyers and Edmonton Oilers.
"It's just important we stay with it because nobody's going to get this tide to turn faster than we are," Miller said. "It's just nice to see a couple of pucks go in for our group, and hopefully the flood gates kind of open up a little bit for us."
Vancouver killed a 36-second 5-on-3 power play with 3:40 left in the third. Demko made three saves against Panarin late in the second penalty despite losing his stick and blocker earlier in the sequence.
"It was amazing to watch," Canucks coach Travis Green said. "I think it just showed the desire of our group to sell out and find a way to get the job done and we had 'Demmer' making a couple unbelievable saves, guys laying their bodies on the line.
"That's what you want to see out of your team; a heavy desire to win, a will to win that takes you to levels that maybe you don't always do."
Demko made one save by kicking the puck with the heel of his skate while down on his stomach, and another while holding his bare hand behind him.
"Just guys battling, it was ugly," Demko said. "Got my eyes on the puck and just trying to get a piece of it."
NOTES: Fox scored his 100th point (15 goals, 85 assists) in his 135th NHL game. Among defensemen to debut with the Rangers, only
Brian Leetch
(102 games) and
Sergei Zubov
(108) reached that milestone in fewer games. … Rangers forward Ryan Reaves missed his third straight game because of a lower-body injury but could return at Edmonton on Friday. … Canucks defenseman Travis Hamonic made his season debut and had two hits and two blocked shots in 16:56 of ice time. Hamonic missed training camp and the start of the season for personal reasons.
