New York Rangers fire head coach Tom Renney @NHLdotcom

NEW YORK - The New York Rangers have fired head coach Tom Renney.

The NHL team made the move a day after a 3-2 overtime loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Rangers are tied with Montreal for fifth place in the Eastern Conference with 69 points.

However, New York is only two points ahead of ninth-place Carolina.

Renney had been head coach of the Rangers for almost five years.

There is no immediate word on his replacement.
