RALEIGH, N.C. -- Andrei Svechnikov scored his first NHL goal to break a third-period tie and the Carolina Hurricanes defeated the New York Rangers 8-5 at PNC Arena on Sunday.

Svechnikov redirected Justin Faulk's shot at 10:44 to give Carolina its first lead at 6-5.
"I'm super happy and excited," said the 18-year-old Svechnikov, who was the No. 2 pick in the 2018 NHL Draft. "Thankfully he was shooting the puck on net and I tipped the puck. It was cool."

Warren Foegele scored his second goal at 11:31 to put Carolina ahead 7-5. Teuvo Teravainen scored an empty-net goal with 31 seconds remaining.
Foegele, Jordan Staal and Justin Williams each had three points, and Petr Mrazek made 19 saves for the Hurricanes (2-0-1).
"I don't think we're going to want to many of those [games]. It kind of got into a track meet for a little bit," said Hurricanes forward Jordan Martinook, who had a goal and an assist. "Just play better defensively and hopefully keep scoring lots of goals and we'll be fine."

NYR@CAR: Svechnikov grabs lead with first NHL goal

Jimmy Vesey and Chris Kreider each scored two goals for the Rangers, who have lost their first three games under coach David Quinn.
The Rangers struck early for a two-goal lead. Vesey took a return pass after a give-and-go with Kevin Hayes and scored at the right post for a 1-0 lead 49 seconds into the first period.
Kreider made it 2-0 at 6:02. Brett Howden fed a pass from the corner to Kreider alone in front of Mrazek.
"Even when we got down two, you could just feel on the bench there was no panic," Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour said. "That's a real positive. Maybe with the young guys, they don't know any better. I like that they just kept digging in."

NYR@CAR: Foegele scores his second to pad the lead

Foegele scored his first of the season to cut the lead to 2-1 at 9:07 on a short pass from Williams behind the net. Martin Necas had the secondary assist for his first NHL point.
"I'm playing with two veterans, and they're telling me to play hockey and not to worry about my mistakes," Foegele said. "Tonight I made a couple mistakes, but they were positive with me."
The Hurricanes tied it 2-2 at 14:14 when Williams set up Martinook in front of the net for his second goal of the season.
Vesey gave the Rangers a 3-2 lead with his second goal at 2:48 of the second period.

Staal made it 3-3 at 9:25 when he beat Alexandar Georgiev over the blocker on a short breakaway.
New York took a 4-3 lead on a power-play goal when Pavel Buchnevich scored on a rebound at 11:41.
Micheal Ferland made it 4-4 with wrist shot from the right point with 51 seconds left in the period.
Kreider's second goal gave the Rangers a 5-4 lead at 1:18 of the third period on a backhand between Mrazek's pads, but the Hurricanes tied it 5-5 at 5:01 when Lucas Wallmark scored from the slot.
"Obviously, we had a real tough night," Quinn said. "Defensively, we looked like we had never gone over these coverages. You have to play situational hockey, and we didn't do a great job of that."

They said it

"Sometimes you have to know when you don't have it, and that's when you keep it more simple. Manage the game better; that's what a pro does. I guess we were excited about scoring goals and just abandoned what we've been doing." -- Rangers coach David Quinn
"You know you're getting a good player [in Martinook], but there is more to it. That's what we need in here, is the quality people. Every move we made, that's what the consideration was. Everyone talks about the abilities, but there's more to it. If we continue to do that, every move we make, every draft pick we do, that's what makes an organization solid." -- Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour
