Beauvillier powers Islanders to overtime victory

TORONTO -- Anthony Beauvillier scored at 1:56 of overtime to give the New York Islanders a 3-2 win against the Toronto Maple Leafs at Scotiabank Arena on Monday.

Beauvillier took a drop pass from Brock Nelson and scored on a wrist shot from the left face-off dot to end a 10-game goal drought.
"I said sorry to 'Nelly' right after the goal, I just felt like screaming and looking up," Beauvillier said. "I felt pretty good, felt pretty good throughout the game, and that's all that matters. I felt like I had my legs. I feel like I am going way too far here, but I felt good."

NYI@TOR: Beauvillier snipes the overtime winner

Josh Bailey tied it 2-2 at 17:02 of the third period, collecting an errant pass from Toronto goalie Erik Kallgren and scoring from the right circle.
"At that point in time, you just give it what you've got," Bailey said. "We were fortunate to get a bounce and tie it up, and then get a great goal in OT. When you are down one, you are never out of it."
Noah Dobson had a goal and an assist, and Ilya Sorokin made 30 saves for the Islanders (12-8-0), who lost their previous two games and finished 2-2-0 on a four-game road trip.
Bailey was a healthy scratch for the first two games of the trip.
"Sorokin was great for us, as per usual, and gave us a chance," Bailey said. "I think we were all a little bit tired. We've been on the road for a little while, but that's part of playing in this league, you just have to grind it out some nights. We just stuck with it, and we were fortunate to find a way to get a win."

NYI@TOR: Bailey evens score late in the 3rd period

Mitchell Marner had an assist to extend his point streak to 13 games (three goals, 15 assists), matching his career high, and Kallgren made 21 saves for the Maple Leafs (10-5-5), who extended their point streak to five games (3-0-2).
"I thought we controlled play and limited a lot of their chances, but obviously a bit of an error and they force overtime and then it's anybody's game," Toronto forward Auston Matthews said. "So, not the result we wanted, but I thought there were a lot of good things we could build off tonight."

NYI@TOR: Matthews redirects shot to take the lead

Matthews gave the Maple Leafs a 2-1 lead at 14:06 of the second period, deflecting a point shot from Timothy Liljegren.
John Tavares tied it 1-1 at 4:49 of the second on a power play with a one-timer in the slot off a goal line touch pass from William Nylander. Marner had the secondary assist.
"We probably didn't really deserve two points tonight," Beauvillier said. "It is what it is, one of those games where you just have to be patient, bear down on your chances, and that's what we did. Wins are wins and when points come like that, we are definitely going to take it and get out of here."
New York was outshot 7-0 before Beauvillier had a shot on goal 6:41 into the first period.
But Dobson put the Islanders up 1-0 at 15:21, a one-timer from the blue line that went in off Maple Leafs forward David Kampf.
"We had to grind that one out," New York captain Anders Lee said. "Guys had heavy legs tonight and there wasn't a ton out there on both sides. They had a good push early in the first, but then we settled in and finished the first period off. The second was just [grinding] hockey and the third we were able to stick with it the whole way and Bailey coming up huge tying that thing up."
Toronto has lost five of its six games that have gone to overtime this season.
"We definitely have to look at our 3-on-3 and try to figure that out and stop forcing stuff," Marner said. "Realize when opportunities are there, then take it but stop forcing it."
