Lightning use balanced effort to top Islanders, 5-3

TAMPA --Brandon Hagel had a goal and an assist for the Tampa Bay Lightning in a 5-3 win against the New York Islanders at Amalie Arena on Saturday.

Brayden Point and Nicholas Paul each also had a goal and an assist for the Lightning (3-3-0), who were coming off a 3-2 overtime win at the Florida Panthers on Friday. Brian Elliott made 32 saves for his first win of the season.
"We spent a lot of energy to win that game last night," Tampa Bay coach Jon Cooper said. "Tonight I thought we were extremely opportunistic. You have to find a way to win when you're not at your best, and the Islanders threw everything at us. [Elliott] was a wall for us back there."

NYI@TBL: Bellemare, Perry link up to double lead

Matt Martin, Anthony Beauvillier and Ryan Pulock scored for the Islanders (2-3-0), who have lost two straight. Ilya Sorokin made 21 saves.
"Although it was a loss tonight, there were some good things out there," Islanders forward Mathew Barzal said. "I thought every line was going pretty good, so we'll take the positives."
Point gave the Lightning a 1-0 lead at 10:43 of the first period, scoring from the edge of the crease after Hagel stole the puck from Scott Mayfield behind the net.
Martin tied it 1-1 at 12:29 with a shot from the high slot following a giveaway by Corey Perry.
"We had a couple of plays where we shot ourselves in the foot," Martin said. "A couple of breakdowns that shouldn't happen, and that costs. But overall, it was a good effort and a good game. If we play like that the rest of the year we'll be where we want to be."

NYI@TBL: Paul doubles Lightning lead at the buzzer

Hagel put Tampa Bay back in front 2-1 at 18:03 of the first on a rebound after Point's initial shot hit the crossbar.
"He's been getting his chances, they just haven't been going in," Cooper said of Hagel, who didn't have a point and was minus-2 through the Lightning's first five games. "That's why you're fired up when they go in for him. He's played well, he works, he retrieves pucks, he does all these things. He's had his chances."
Perry extended the lead to 3-1 at 3:12 of the second period, finishing a cross-crease pass from Pierre-Edouard Bellemare at the left post.
Beauviller cut it to 3-2 at 9:36 when his backhand on a rush trickled through Elliott.
"Much better effort. (We) probably deserved better, but a step in the right direction," Islanders forward Cal Clutterbuck said. "We just made some big mistakes at some bad times."

NYI@TBL: Hagel scores in 1st period

Paul restored the Lightning's two-goal lead with 0.1 seconds left in the second. After Nikita Soshnikov turned the puck over at the Islanders blue line, Paul took a pass from Ross Colton and beat Sorokin blocker side with a wrist shot from the right circle.
"I just knew there wasn't a lot of time left," Paul said. "I knew I had to get it on net in a good spot, so I went to the low blocker with .1 seconds to spare."
Pulock got the Islanders back to within 4-3 at 5:45 of the third period, but Alex Killorn got to a loose puck in the low slot at 14:08 for the 5-3 final.
It was Killorn's first goal since April 21 (33 games, including playoffs).
"You start to think you're never going to score again in the NHL," Killorn said. "I wasn't going to be denied. It was probably the hardest I've ever shot a puck."
NOTES:New York was 3-for-3 on the penalty kill and is 18-for-18 this season. … Lightning forward Nikita Kucherov had an assist to extend his point streak to four games (seven assists). … Clutterbuck had a game-high 10 hits.
