Red Wings shut out Islanders, 3-0

DETROIT --Ville Husso made 24 saves, and the Detroit Red Wings ended the New York Islanders' winning streak at five games with a 3-0 victory at Little Caesars Arena on Saturday.

Husso's shutout was his second this season and fifth in the NHL.
"The guys did a great job in front of me today, they made my life easy again," said Husso, who is 5-1-1 in seven starts this season. "They do all the big things, and I just have to focus on keeping out any goals."
Dominik Kubalik had a goal and an assist for Detroit (6-3-2), which was without forwards Tyler Bertuzzi (two),
Jakub Vrana
(two) and Robby Fabbri (none), who have combined to play four games this season.
"If you had told me we would be sitting where we are right now with the players we're missing, I would have told you there's no way," Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde said. "It's about our players and their commitment to their teammates."
Semyon Varlamov made 22 saves for the New York (7-5-0), which was shutout for the first time this season. Ilya Sorokin, who played the final 8:13 of the second period after Varlamov briefly left following a collision, allowed one goal on two shots.
"Give them credit, they did a good job of taking away time and space, but I didn't think we played fast enough, and there's no excuse for that," Islanders coach Lane Lambert said. "We had 30 shot attempts in the first two periods and finished with 63, 33 in the third period. Clearly, we weren't doing enough in the first 40 minutes."
Lucas Raymond gave the Red Wings a 1-0 lead at 6:29 of the second period, finishing a cross-slot pass from Kubalik on a 5-on-3 power play.

NYI@DET: Raymond nets goal on two-man advantage

"I feel like we've been getting a lot of looks on the power play every time we're out there," Raymond said. "[Kubalik] knows I'm going to be looking for the backdoor pass, and he's done a great job of finding me."
Varlamov left at 11:47 of the second period after Islanders forward Zach Parise cross-checked Raymond into him, and on the ensuing power play, Pius Suter scored a short-handed goal when he beat Sorokin glove side on a breakaway to make it 2-0 at 12:51.
"We'd had a couple of power plays, so we knew we'd have to spend some time on the PK," Suter said. "Getting a two-goal lead is huge, and when you do it short-handed, it really takes the momentum away from them."

Kubalik pushed it to 3-0 at 10:13 of the third period, beating Varlamov short side from the left circle.
"We've got a busy week ahead of us, with games on Monday (Calgary Flames) and Tuesday (New York Rangers), so we have to take the things we liked, look at the things we need to correct, and move on," Lambert said.
NOTES:Red Wings forward Filip Zadina left the game in the third period with a leg injury after blocking a shot. "I don't think we'll see him for a while," Lalonde said. … Kubalik (five goals, nine assists) and Dylan Larkin (six goals, eight assists) are tied for the team lead with 14 points in 10 games. They each had an assist on Raymond's goal. … Islanders center Mathew Barzal has not scored a goal in 12 games this season after scoring once in his final 15 games last season. He has 21 assists in those 27 games.
