Carolina seeks best start in its history; Leddy, Cizikas game-time decisions for New York

The Game

The Carolina Hurricanes will try to improve to 5-0-0 for the first time in franchise history when they host the New York Islanders at PNC Arena on Friday.

The Hartford Whalers were 4-0-0 to begin the 1995-96 season.

Forward Julien Gauthier, selected in the first round (No. 21) of the 2016 NHL Draft, will make his NHL debut with Carolina. He had 27 goals in 75 games last season for Charlotte of the American Hockey League. Goaltender Petr Mrazek will start for the Hurricanes.

Defenseman Nick Leddy and center Casey Cizikas will be game-time decisions for the Islanders, who will play their first road game of the season.

Thomas Greiss will start in goal. He is 8-4-1 with a 2.57 goals-against average, a .922 save percentage and one shutout against the Hurricanes.

The Hurricanes swept the Islanders in the second round of the 2019 Stanley Cup Playoffs.


Players to watch

Islanders forward Anthony Beauvillier has a three-game point streak (two goals, two assists) and leads New York with four points.

Hurricanes forward Andrei Svechnikov has two assists in each of the past three games and leads the team in points (six).

Status report 

Kuhnhackl will make his season debut for the Islanders. ... If Leddy is unable to play, Trotz said Dobson will move to the left side and likely play with Boychuk. ... Martinook is expected to miss 6-8 weeks after surgery Friday to repair a core muscle injury.
