NJD@NYR: DeAngelo records hatty, two assists in win

NEW YORK -- Tony DeAngelo had a hat trick and five points, matching New York Rangers records for goals and points by a defenseman in a game in a 6-3 win against the New Jersey Devils at Madison Square Garden on Thursday.

"My NHL] career high was two [points in a game]*
Artemi Panarin had a goal and two assists, and Igor Shesterkin made 46 saves for his second win in as many NHL starts for the Rangers (21-18-4).
"He was really good, and we needed him to be," Quinn said.
Damon Severson had a goal and an assist, and Mackenzie Blackwood allowed five goals on 25 shots before Louis Domingue (11 saves) replaced him at 15:02 of the second period for the Devils (15-21-7), who are 0-2-1 in their past three games.
"Defensively it has to get better, simple as that," Devils coach Alain Nasreddine said. "It's not just in our own zone, there were a couple goals that started from their zone from missed assignments or not fully committed to playing the system, breakdowns. … There's got to be a better commitment to defense."
Panarin gave the Rangers a 1-0 lead with a one-timer off a pass from DeAngelo at 5:42 of the first period.

Kevin Rooney's shorthanded goal tied it 1-1 at 8:06, but DeAngelo scored at 9:47 for a 2-1 lead.
On a power play, DeAngelo's slap pass out of the defensive zone banged off the end boards in the Devils zone and went to Chris Kreider, who beat the icing and scored to make it 3-1 at 12:16. It was Kreider's 300th NHL point.
"I told [Kreider] we'd give it a shot there just because of the way they were playing, they were trying to take away [Panarin]," DeAngelo said. "I thought we could catch them and fortunately it took a real good bounce and he made a great finish."
Coleman made it 3-2 at 18:10 on a deflection, and he helped tie the game at 3-3 at 8:56 of the second period when Severson was awarded a goal on video review because Jacob Trouba pushed Coleman into the post, causing the net to come off its moorings prior to the puck crossing the goal line.

Situation Room: Coleman's shot ruled a goal

The initial shot came from Severson and Trouba appeared to knock it toward the goal line with his skate before hitting Coleman into the post.
But DeAngelo made it 4-3 at 12:08 and completed his first NHL hat trick with a power-play goal for a 5-3 lead at 15:02.
Domingue replaced Blackwood before the ensuing face-off.
Shesterkin made the save on the last 23 shots he faced, including 18 in the third period, and Jesper Fast scored on a 2-on-1 with Ryan Strome at 12:56 of the third for the 6-3 final.

They said it

"Way too many Grade A chances against. We're certainly generating a lot more offense than we were. We had a lot of good opportunities to score goals. Obviously they had some pretty solid goaltending, but at the same time three in this league should be enough to at least be in the game." -- Devils forward Blake Coleman
"It's nice to see [DeAngelo] get rewarded. I know he works real hard and sometimes defenseman is a tough position to get rewarded, but I mean five points and a hat trick, he's kicking the feet up tonight." -- Rangers forward Ryan Strome
