NJD@LAK: Kempe roofs overtime-winner from circle

LOS ANGELES -- Adrian Kempe scored 1:58 into overtime to give the Los Angeles Kings a 2-1 win against the New Jersey Devils at Staples Center on Saturday.

Dustin Brown also scored, and Jonathan Quick made 32 saves for the Kings (24-35-6), who went 3-1-1 during their five-game homestand. Los Angeles is 5-2-1 in its past eight.
"Obviously tonight, it wasn't our best game, but I think lately the last couple weeks it's been good," Kempe said. "I think everyone is just bringing what they can, the effort and everything like that. That shows up in the results that we didn't get a couple weeks ago."

Mackenzie Blackwood made 36 saves and had his six-game winning streak end for the Devils (25-27-12), who extended their point streak to five games (3-0-2). Nikita Gusev extended his point streak to five with an assist.
Kempe got his 100th NHL point with a wrist shot from the right circle after the Kings controlled possession of the puck for nearly the entirety of overtime.
Kempe's 11th goal of the season ended a span of 18 games without scoring. It was his first goal since he scored twice at the Vegas Golden Knights on Jan. 9.

"The far side was kind of open, and haven't scored in a while, so it was time to shoot," Kempe said.
New Jersey coach Alain Nasreddine said the Devils were not smart enough managing the puck when they did have it in overtime.
"It started with us," Nasreddine said. "We took a shot, not really a real quality shot and ended up giving the [Kings] possession. And they just kept it, kept it, kept it until they got that scoring chance, and it ended up costing us."
Quick had to make several difficult saves in the third period. He used his right skate to save Gusev's shot during a 2-on-1 at 11:15 and blocked the follow-up by Pavel Zacha with both hands.
"They had a lot of opportunities that [Quick] stood big and strong in the net (to stop)," Kings coach Todd McLellan said.
Blackwood was just as effective, starting with saving dangerous shots by Trevor Lewis and Trevor Moore with 22 seconds remaining in the first period. Nasreddine praised Blackwood, who is 7-0-2 in his past nine starts, as "very strong once again."
"He's been in the zone now for a while," Nasreddine said. "He was in control, rebounds were good, so it was a great performance again."
Bratt scored on a one-timer from the right circle to give the Devils a 1-0 lead at 7:19 of the first period. It was Bratt's fourth goal in the past five games. Gusev had the assist for his eighth point (two goals, six assists) during his point streak.

Los Angeles tied it 1-1 at 13:14 of the second period when Brown scored in the slot on a give-and-go from Anze Kopitar after the Kings forced a turnover by Damon Severson in the offensive zone.
Defenseman Mikey Anderson made his NHL debut for the Kings against his brother Joey Anderson, a forward for the Devils. Mikey had one shot on goal in 18:59 of ice time.
