WINDSOR, Ont. - Greg Nemisz and Eric Wellwood both scored twice as the Windsor Spitfires secured an Ontario Hockey League playoff birth by doubling up the Plymouth Whalers 6-3 on Sunday afternoon.
Taylor Hall scored his 28th goal of the season and Justin Shugg, with his 16th of the season, also scored as Windsor became the first team in the OHL to clinch a playoff spot this season.
Ryan Ellis, Dale Mitchell and Lane MacDermid all chipped in with two assists for the Spitfires (42-5-0-1), who extended their winning streak to 13 games.
Nemisz, the first round draft pick of the Calgary Flames last summer, scored both his goals on the powerplay in the first period. Wellwood's goals came in the third, his second into an empty net.
Matt Caria, AJ Jenks and Jamie Devane scored for Plymouth (22-21-5-0).
Former Spitfire Matt Hackett made 29 saves while taking the loss in goal for the Whalers while Andrew Engelage stopped 28 shots at the other end en route to picking up his franchise-record and league-leading 34th win of the season.
