Montreal signs defenseman Rivers

MONTREAL (AP) -Defenseman Jamie Rivers signed a one-year contract with the Montreal Canadiens on Thursday, the fourth free agent to join the team this week.

Rivers, 32, joined his eighth NHL team after splitting the previous season between St. Louis and its AHL affiliate in Peoria.

He has 383 penalty minutes, 17 goals and 66 points in 454 regular season games with the Blues, New York Islanders, Ottawa, Boston, Florida, Detroit and Phoenix.

Canadiens GM Bob Gainey signed veterans Roman Hamrlik and Bryan Smolinski to multiyear deals Monday, and forward Tom Kostopoulos agreed to a one-year deal Wednesday.

Center Tomas Plekanec, a restricted free agent, also agreed to a two-year contract Thursday. Minor leaguers Mathieu Biron, Cory Urquhart and Marvin Degeon signed one-year deals.
