Ylonen's 3rd-period goal lifts Canadiens to victory

SAN JOSE --The Montreal Canadiens scored three goals in the third period, and Jake Allen made 38 saves in a 3-1 win against the San Jose Sharks at SAP Center on Tuesday.

Allen stopped 15 of 16 shots in the first period before Montreal held San Jose to 16 shots over the final two periods, including seven in the third.
"I thought we played responsible," Allen said. "We weren't risky in the third period. We had a couple good looks and had two goals. We could have gotten frustrated after the first two [periods]. We had some good chances to score. Their goalie played really well."
Kaiden Guhle and Jesse Ylonen scored 1:52 apart, and Christian Dvorak had a goal and an assist for the Canadiens (26-30-4), who started a four-game road trip.
"Jake was solid," Montreal coach Martin St. Louis said. "[A] big reason why we won the game. I didn't mind our first two periods, I just felt we were leaving a lot on the table because we just weren't quite executing. We talked between the second and third that, you know, we need the third to be our best period of tonight, and it was."

Jacob MacDonald scored for the Sharks (18-31-12), who have lost three straight (0-2-1). Kaapo Kahkonen made 29 saves.
"I thought we were too loose," San Jose coach David Quinn said. "Even in the first two periods, we had some chances to go up 2-0 and just couldn't capitalize. We were just too loose at the end of the day. When you give up a 2-on-0 basically to lose the game, that's just not really having a conscience and not reading the situation."
MacDonald gave the Sharks a 1-0 lead at 1:43 of the first period on a shot through traffic for his first goal of the season and his first with San Jose after being acquired from the Colorado Avalanche on Jan. 25.
"Our guys had a great forecheck," MacDonald said. "Puck just popped out to a good spot and I put it home."
Guhle tied it 1-1 at 8:07 of the third period on a shot from beyond the face-off circles. It was his first game since a lower-body injury sustained Dec. 29.
"Sometimes those ones just kind of squeak in, and to kind of get the boys started," Guhle said. "Happy to contribute to the team."

Ylonen put Montreal ahead 2-1 at 9:59 on a 2-on-0 with Rem Pitlick.
"I know that Pitlick is a really good player, and he can see those plays," Ylonen said. "So, I actually was expecting the puck to come, and it was a great play by him. It was easy to score from there."
Dvorak scored an empty-net goal with five seconds left for the 3-1 final.
