Modano gets 500th goal @NHLdotcom

DALLAS (AP) -Mike Modano of the Dallas Stars became the second U.S.-born player and 39th overall in NHL history to reach 500 goals Tuesday night.

He scored with 10:24 left in the third period against the Philadelphia Flyers. Modano's goal was the winner in a 3-2 victory.

The 36-year-old native of Livonia, Mich., beat Flyers goaltender Antero Niittymaki with a quick shot from in front of the net for his 15th goal of the season. That pulled Modano within two of Joe Mullen for the career lead among U.S.-born players.

Modano joined Brendan Shanahan, Jaromir Jagr, Joe Sakic, Peter Bondra, Mats Sundin, Teemu Selanne and Mark Recchi as active 500-goal scorers.
