Suter, Stalock propel Wild to win

CALGARY -- Ryan Suter had a goal and two assists, and Alex Stalock made 35 saves to help the Minnesota Wild to a 4-2 win against the Calgary Flames at Scotiabank Saddledome on Saturday.
Jared Spurgeon had a goal and an assist, and Daniel Winnik and Chris Stewart also scored for the Wild (2-2-2), who have started the season with five of six games on the road and are without injured forwards Zach Parise (undisclosed), Nino Niederreiter (ankle sprain), Charlie Coyle (fibula fracture), Mikael Granlund (groin) and Landon Ferraro (hip flexor).

"We're so shorthanded, and for us to find ways to win is what it's all about right now," Suter said. "We're doing a good job at that. Hopefully we can continue that."
Stewart joined Andrew Brunette (seven games, 2009-10) and Pavol Demitra (six games, 2006-07) as the third player in Wild history to get at least one point in each of the first six games of a season.
"He's on fire right now," Suter said. "I think we have four of our top six out right now and having a guy like him step up and put the puck in the net is huge. Hopefully he can keep that going because I think our guys are going to be out for a while."

Sean Monahan and Kris Versteeg scored, and Mike Smith made 28 saves for the Flames (4-4-0), who are 1-3-0 on home ice to start the season.
"You want to put on a show for your fans," Smith said. "They come out and support us. We want to win here. We want to be hard to play against in our own rink. Obviously, our record isn't where we want it to be."
Minnesota trailed 2-1 but rallied midway through the third period in the second of back-to-back games following a 4-3 loss at the Winnipeg Jets on Friday.
Suter scored at 10:33 to tie the game 2-2, and Spurgeon slapped a shot by Smith to put the Wild up 3-2 at 12:08.
"You could see the confidence on the bench when [Suter] put that one in and we just got a little energy," Spurgeon said. "We played last night but I think the guys did a good job of keeping the shifts short and playing simple."

Winnik scored into an empty net with 1:03 remaining to make it 4-2.
Stalock made 18 first-period saves, and Stewart scored his sixth goal 4:49 into the second period on the power play to put Minnesota up 1-0.
Monahan tied the game 1-1 when he scored his team-leading fifth goal at 19:32.
Minnesota coach Bruce Boudreau unsuccessfully challenged the play was offside on Monahan's goal, and Versteeg scored 43 seconds into the third period to make it 2-1 with Calgary on a two-man advantage created by the ensuing delay-of-game penalty from the coach's challenge and a slashing minor to Suter.

Spurgeon stepped into a slap shot from just below the faceoff dot that beat Smith short side over his shoulder and under the crossbar for the game-winner. "There was a little bit [of room]," Spurgeon said. "Our scouting staff did a good job about telling us where to shoot. I just tried to shoot it as hard as I could."

Save of the game

With 1:37 remaining in the third period and the Flames skating 6-on-4, Stalock stopped Monahan's shot from the slot and got his pad over in time to eliminate a rebound attempt from Mikael Backlund. "He's the ultimate pro," Suter said. "To see him go in there and have so much success is great for him, obviously, and it's great for our team."

Stewart's first shot was stopped by Smith, but he continued to the net and knocked his own rebound out of mid-air and into the net.

Flames forward Jaromir Jagr left the game in the first period because of a lower-body injury. Gulutzan didn't have an update postgame.
