Mikko Rantanen Anaheim Ducks 2018 November 18

Even before his overtime goal, Mikko Rantanen joined some elite company in Colorado Avalanche lore.
Rantanen had points in each of the team's final three tallies, with his one-timer with 1.3 seconds left in the extra period completing the Avs' 4-3 comeback victory at the Anaheim Ducks on Sunday night.

He joins Peter Forsberg and Joe Sakic (both in 1996-97) and as the only Colorado players with at least 30 points after the first 20 games of the season (eighth different player in franchise history). Rantanen leads the league with 24 assists and 32 points, the latter of which is three more than the total of linemate Nathan MacKinnon, who is second in NHL scoring with 29 points.
Rantanen is the first NHL player to reach the 30-point mark this season, the third time an Avalanche/Quebec Nordiques player accomplished the feat. Forsberg did it in 1997-98 while Sakic hit 30 first in 1998-99.
The 22-year-old from Nousiainen, Finland, has held a share of the league's scoring lead for each of the last 27 days (since Oct. 23), and he's been the outright leader for 21 of those days.
Rantanen completed the final rush by the Avs during a 4-on-3 power play and while the overtime clock was in its final seconds.

MacKinnon set up the winning play after chasing the puck into the neutral zone and then trying to find space in the Avs' O-zone with time running out. The center finally found Rantanen at the right point, and the right wing sent a slap shot that sailed far side into the net for the team's first overtime win of the year.
"We had 14 seconds and with the puck out of the zone, but we got it quickly back thanks to Nate," Rantanen said. "Got the one-timer there. Good thing it went in this time."
Rantanen's goal was the second of his career in OT and secured the 1000th win in Avalanche history; the team has 898 victories in the regular season and another 102 in the playoffs since moving from Quebec in 1995. Rantanen's last marker in an extra fame was on Feb. 17, 2017 at the Carolina Hurricanes.

Colorado stormed back with three consecutive goals in the final 27 minutes of play after the club got down 3-1 in the second period. Rantanen assisted on MacKinnon's marker with 1:55 left in the middle frame and then on Gabriel Landeskog's game-tying tally at 11:30 of the third stanza.
"We knew we wanted to bounce back," Rantanen said of the Avs' mindset heading into the third period. "We got a big goal from Nate at the end of the second. It was a one-goal game. We knew we had a lot of gas in the tank, so we knew that we were going to outplay them in the third, and I think that's what we did. They defended pretty well, but we got it done, so that is the biggest thing."
The young Colorado forward has made a habit this season of picking up points in bunches. Rantanen has recorded three or more points in six games already this year, with his last coming this past Wednesday's versus the Boston Bruins--another comeback victory for the squad.
MORE TOP LINE SUCCESS:Rantanen's linemates also had multi-point nights, with Nathan MacKinnon registering a goal and two assists and Landeskog picking up a marker and a helper.
"You just had the feeling that with some of the chances that they were able to create, that they would be difference makers," Bednar said of the line. "Then they end up getting a couple goals for us--a couple big goals for us."
It was MacKinnon's fifth three-point performance of the season and brings his scoring total to 13 goals and 29 points on the year.
For Landeskog, it marked his sixth multi-point game of the season. His 13 tallies are tied with MacKinnon for fourth most in the NHL. He also shares the league lead with a plus-13 rating.

BARRIE KEEPS CLIMBING: Tyson Barrie picked up a helper on Nathan MacKinnon's second period goal to move into second place in franchise history for assists by a defenseman. It also extended his point streak to five games (one goal, five assists).
The rear guard is now tied with Adam Foote with 203 career assists. He is four helpers away from John-Michael Liles' franchise record of 207 assists.
Barrie ranks tied for sixth among all NHL D-men with 16 points and is fifth with 15 assists on the year.
He is also one goal away from taking sole possession of third place in goals for his position in Avalanche/Quebec Nordiques history. He is tied with Rob Blake with 62 markers.
INJURY REPORT:Colin Wilson missed his first game of the season, joining Matt Nieto on the injury list with a lower-body ailment. Wilson has five goals and three assists in 19 contests this year.
Nieto missed his second straight game and the third in the last five games with his injury.
ROSTER NOTES:Forward Marko Dano returned to the Avs' lineup with Wilson missing the contest with his lower-body injury. He began on a line with center Vladislav Kamenev and fellow wing Gabriel Bourque.
Defenseman Nikita Zadorov returned to Colorado's game roster following his one-outing stint as a healthy scratch. He replaced Marko Barberio on the blue line.
Goaltender Philipp Grubauer made his second-straight start and stopped 30 shots. He improves to 4-1-2 on the season and has not lost a game in regulation in six consecutive outings (4-0-2).
"I thought he did a really nice job for us and earned the victory here tonight," Bednar said of Grubauer. "We just had to make sure we provided him with enough offense."
MORE NOTES:Only five other teams have won 1,000 or more games since the Avs arrived in Denver for the 1995-96 season (Detroit 1146, Pittsburgh 1044, New Jersey 1020, Dallas 1009, San Jose 1002).
Mikko Rantanen registered his first game-winning goal of the season, the sixth of his career.
Rantanen's tally is the latest overtime goal of the season (4:58), eclipsing the previous mark set by Dylan Larkin on Nov. 9 (4:54).
The Avalanche finished 2-for-2 on the power play, the second time this season it has been perfect with the man advantage. Colorado's power play is now 20-for-66 (30.3%) in 2018-19, ranked second in the league.
Tyson Barrie (24:13), Erik Johnson (25:39), Nathan MacKinnon (25:43), and Gabriel Landeskog (25:24) each set season highs for time on ice. Landeskog's 25:24 is also a career high.
