The 37-year-old goalie was 23-16-2 with a 2.73 goals-against average, a .898 save percentage and two shutouts in 42 games (40 starts) with the Calgary Flames last season, and was 1-4 with a 3.20 GAA, a .917 save percentage and one shutout in five Stanley Cup Playoff games.

"(General manager) Ken Holland and [coach Dave Tippett] were one of my first calls when the period opened," Smith told Sportsnet. "They expressed interest right from Day One. I want to be a guy that comes in and brings a leadership to the locker room and a presence on the ice and help this team get back into the playoffs. Obviously with players like Connor [McDavid] and Leon [Draisaitl] … to have those difference-makers on your team is important, and like I said, I'm excited about this opportunity in Edmonton."
Selected by the Dallas Stars in the fifth round (No. 161) of the 2001 NHL Draft, Smith is 243-236-68 with a 2.70 GAA, a .912 save percentage and 38 shutouts in 571 games (551 starts) with the Flames, Stars, Phoenix/Arizona Coyotes and Tampa Bay Lightning. He is 11-12 with a 2.17 GAA, a .938 save percentage and four shutouts in 24 NHL playoff games (22 starts).
"The opportunity to battle it out for the No. 1 position. I think Mikko Koskinen had a good year last year, is a big guy, we'll have a good tandem there," Smith said about why he signed with Edmonton. "I want to push him to be better and help him out as much as I can too."
The Oilers also signed forward Markus Granlund to a one-year contract. He had 22 points (12 goals, 10 assists) in 77 games with the Vancouver Canucks last season.
The 26-year-old, who was a second-round pick (No. 45) of the Flames in the 2011 NHL Draft, has 97 points (55 goals, 42 assists) in 301 games with the Canucks and Flames.
