DETROIT - Michael Ryder scored with 14 minutes left in the third period and the Boston Bruins beat the Detroit Red Wings 2-1 in a pre-season game Friday night.

Tuukka Rask of the Bruins had 23 saves against the reigning Stanley Cup champions. Derek Meech's power-play goal at 2:40 of the third period brought the Red Wings into a 1-1 tie.

P.J. Axelsson gave the Bruins the lead at 11:39 of the first period. Through two periods Rask stopped all 16 shots he faced.

Detroit played without a number of veteran players, including Darren McCarty, Henrik Zetterberg and Nicklas Lidstrom. Lidstrom broke his nose in Wednesday's 3-2 shootout loss to Montreal.
