McMillan adds to 3-point effort with SO winner as Kelowna edges Portland 5-4 @NHLdotcom

.KELOWNA, B.C. - Brandon McMillan scored the shootout winner as the Kelowna Rockets edged the Portland Winter Hawks 5-4 in Western Hockey League action Friday night.

Cody Almond, with two goals, Tyson Barrie and Stepan Novotny scored in regulation time for Kelowna (25-16-0-0), which trailed 1-0, 2-0 and 3-2 before taking a 4-3 lead early in the third period with two power-play goals eight seconds apart.

McMillan also recorded three assists. The win was the Rockets' fifth in their past seven games since the Christmas break.

Luke Walker, Stefan Schneider, Radim Valchar and, with 52 seconds left in regulation, Colin Reddin replied for Portland (12-26-1-1), which challenged Kelowna despite having the Western Conference's worst record, but misfired on power-play opportunities. The Winter Hawks are now a surprising 4-2-0-1 since Dec. 27.

Kurtis Mucha made 32 saves for Portland, while Adam Brown, in his second straight start, stopped 24 shots for the Rockets, who host the Prince George Cougars (15-26-0-1) on Saturday night.
