San Jose Sharks coach Todd McLellan has been named head coach for Canada at the 2015 IIHF World Championship in the Czech Republic, May 1-17.

Jim Nill, general manager for the Canadian national men's team, made the announcement Tuesday.

McLellan will be assisted by Carolina Hurricanes coach Bill Peters, Sharks assistant coach Jay Woodcroft and Peter DeBoer.

"This is a coaching staff with extensive experience in the NHL and knowledge of the international game, as well," Nill said in a statement. "As a management group we are excited to work with this staff, and look forward to building a roster and representing Canada in the Czech Republic next month."

Canada will open the tournament against Latvia on May 1. It will also play against Austria, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Sweden and Switzerland in preliminary-round competition.

The gold medal game is scheduled May 17 at O2 Arena in Prague.
