EDMONTON - Shane McColgan's first career WHL goal was all the Kelowna Rockets needed in a 3-0 victory over the Edmonton Oil Kings on Wednesday night.
McColgan's goal gave Kelowna (20-14-0-0) the lead just 37 seconds into the game, as he cut down the right wing and beating Oil Kings goaltender Torrie Jung on the short side.
Jeff Lee came close to evening things up twice for Edmonton (15-19-2-3) - once on a backhander in the first period that was cleared away by defenceman Collin Bowman, and then on a wrist shot in the second period that rang off the post.
Lucas Bloodoff had Kelowna's best chance of the third period with a redirection that slid off the post and out.
The Oil Kings thought they had tied it later in the period as a tipped puck bounced up and Craig McCallum knocked it out of mid-air into the net. Officials ruled he made contact with a high stick, and the goal was waved off.
Cody Almond and Dylan Hood added empty-net insurance goals to ice the win for the Rockets.
Jung turned aside 24 shots for Edmonton, while counterpart Kris Lazaruk made 31 saves for Kelowna to earn the shutout.
