BELLEVILLE, Ont. - Florida Panthers prospect Shawn Matthais had the game-winner late in the first period and Mike Murphy turned aside 24 shots as the surging Belleville Bulls beat the rival Kingston Frontenacs 4-1 on Wednesday night in the Ontario Hockey League.
Matthias' 26th goal of the season on a power play at 15:28 of the first gave Belleville a 2-1 lead and the Bulls (39-12-4-2) cruised from there en route to their sixth win in the past seven games. The victory kept Belleville six points up on the Oshawa Generals for the OHL's East Division lead.
Nigel Williams, Nick Pageau and Andrew Self added singles for the Bulls, while Cory Tanaka, Matt Beleskey and Adam Perry had two assists apiece. Perry now has 30 point (11 goals, 19 assists) in 19 games since coming to the Bulls in a trade with the London Knights.
Kyle Paige had the lone goal for the Frontenacs (17-36-0-2), who have dropped three straight. Kingston has lost six of meetings against Belleville this season and has been outscored 38-16 over that span.
The teams conclude their regular-season series Friday night in Kingston.
John Murray stopped 38 shots for the Frontenacs, who finished 0-for-2 on the power play. Belleville scored twice in six man-advantage opportunities.
