5 things you didn't know about Penguins' Murray

The emergence of Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Matt Murray is becoming the biggest storyline of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
In his most impressive effort thus far, Murray, a 21-year-old rookie with 13 games of NHL experience prior to the start of the playoffs, made 47 saves in the Penguins' 3-2 defeat of the Washington Capitals in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Second Round at Consol Energy Center on Monday.

He remained the starter even though regular starting goalie Marc-Andre Fleury was cleared to play. Fleury was the backup Monday.
The win gave the Penguins a 2-1 lead in the best-of-7 series. Game 4 is Wednesday (8 p.m. ET; NBCSN, CBC, TVA Sports).
"He was great," Penguins captain Sidney Crosby said Monday in
a video on the Penguins website

"Obviously he was tested a lot. They came with a big push there in the third [period], and he made some big saves. Not only then but throughout the game. He was really important to us winning tonight."

Murray missed the first two games of the postseason recovering from an upper-body injury sustained April 9 against the Philadelphia Flyers. He made his first start in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference First Round against the New York Rangers, and in six playoff games has a .944 save percentage and a 1.79 goals-against average.
He may be one of the hottest names in the NHL, but here are five things you may not know about Murray:
1. He was not a big star in junior hockey. In four seasons with Sault Ste. Marie of the Ontario Hockey League, he had a 3.42 GAA and .898 save percentage. Murray was the Team Cherry MVP at the 2012 CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game in 2012 but was No. 18 among North American goalies in NHL Central Scouting's final rankings for the 2012 NHL Draft.
2. Murray was selected by the Penguins in the third round (No. 83) of the 2012 draft. He was their fifth selection and 10th goalie picked in the draft, which took place in Pittsburgh.

3. He holds the American Hockey League record for longest shutout streak, at 304 minutes, 11 seconds, during the 2014-15 season. His streak included four consecutive shutouts, and he came 1:11 shy of a fifth straight. He broke the previous record, held by Barry Brust, by about 37 minutes.
4. In two Game 3s during the 2016 playoffs, Murray has a 1.50 GAA and a .955 save percentage. He made 16 saves in his playoff debut in a 3-1 win in Game 3 against the Rangers in the first round. In Game 3 against the Capitals, he became the second rookie goaltender with at least 47 saves in a playoff game since shots on goal were first recorded in 1967-68, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

5. Murray plays guitar in his spare time, and music runs in the family. His brother, Mike, plays guitar in the Toronto-based band Earth's Yellow Sun and is a guitar instructor at the Arcadia Academy of Music in Woodbridge, Ontario.
