PHILADELPHIA -- Philadelphia Flyers goalie Steve Mason will return to the lineup Tuesday and serve as the backup to Ray Emery in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference First Round Stanley Cup Playoff series against the New York Rangers (8 p.m. ET, CNBC, TSN, SNET-360, MSG, CSN-PH).
The best-of-7 series is tied 1-1.
"He feels better," Flyers coach Craig Berube said of Mason. "He's ready and he feels like he wants to get in there and be the backup. So we talked, made the decision. He's going to back up [Tuesday]."
It will be Mason's first time in the lineup since sustaining an upper-body injury April 12 against the Pittsburgh Penguins when Pittsburgh forward Jayson Megna pushed Flyers defenseman Andrew MacDonald into Mason.
Mason had said after practicing Monday that he would not be dressing for Game 3. But he skated on his own with goalie coach Jeff Reese for about 35 minutes Tuesday morning, then alternated practice drills with Calvin Heeter during the morning skate.
"After practice I talked to the media and then I went back ... sat down with [Mason and Reese] and we talked about it. We all thought it was a good idea."
Berube opted to keep Emery as the starter based on how Emery played in the first two games against the Rangers. Emery made 31 saves in the Flyers' 4-2 win in Game 2 and has a .913 save percentage in the series.
"Ray won Game 2," Berube said. "Ray's played well."
The unanswered question is what happens after Game 3. Berube was asked if he would stick with Emery as long as he was winning or if Mason would be the starter in Game 4. However, Berube said he was focused solely on Tuesday.
"I'm worried about [Game 3]," he said. "That's it. [Emery] is playing [Tuesday]."
