Winnipeg Jets forward Mark Scheifele is keeping a diary of his experiences at the 2016 Tim Hortons NHL Heritage Classic at Investors Group Field in Winnipeg. The Oilers face the Winnipeg Jets on Sunday (3 p.m. ET; NHLN, SN, TVA Sports2, NHL.TV) in the 19th outdoor regular-season NHL game and the first of four this season.
In his first entry, Scheifele, an alternate captain, touches on the state of the Jets, including their 5-4 overtime victory against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Wednesday in which rookie Patrik Laine had a hat trick.
WINNIPEG -- Our 5-4 overtime win against Toronto on Wednesday was pretty special. Obviously we're pretty pumped. It was a big comeback for us and that was a huge thing to do, especially [after being] down 4-0. We knew [Thursday] was another work day and it was something we needed to focus on, that you can win a game but there's still another one coming around the corner. And each one's as big as the next. Now we have to focus on Edmonton and doing better as a team and go from there.
We've had four games so far and we've been behind in every one of them. Definitely, we don't want that. We don't want to be going into the second period down in every game, so we've probably got to focus more on our preparation and coming out with good starts and playing through a full 60 minutes. If we can get to doing that, we'll be fine.

After a week or so of the regular season and with some of the changes that have happened with the team, we're still kind of figuring things out. You can see in the first four games that we're not where we want to be. We have two wins and we came back in two big games, but those games could easily have been 6-0 for the other team and we could have been totally out of it. In our minds, we have to buckle down in that area and focus on playing a full 60 minutes as a team.
We have seen a lot of hype so far about Patrik Laine and whenever I get asked, I just tell people I'm taking all the credit. He was on my line when he scored all three on Wednesday so I'm taking all the credit.
Our outdoor game is coming up on Sunday. The last time I played a game outside was just playing with buddies on an outdoor rink, playing some shinny. That's a long time ago. So this will be pretty exciting to play in a real game outdoors. This is going to be crazy, something we're all probably going to remember for the rest of our lives, which is a pretty cool thing to be a part of. It's going to be fun to share it with a lot of family and friends and with all the guys so it's going to be an exciting week for sure.
For the game, we'll have to get used to the rink because it's obviously going to be different, no people right on top of you, and we'll be outside, so it'll be a different climate. I think if we get a good practice under our belts, which is coming up Saturday at the stadium, we'll be fine.
