Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School's boys varsity hockey team won the Florida state championship on Sunday, 10 days after 17 students and staff members were killed in a mass shooting at the school.
Playing in the Statewide Amateur Hockey of Florida High School State Championship, the Eagles won two games on Sunday, including a 7-4 win against Jesuit High School in the Tier 1 final. Douglas, which entered the four-team playoff as the fourth seed, defeated top-seeded East Lake High School, 3-1, in its first game Sunday.
"We came into the game knowing we had to give it our all to get the win and that's what we did and now we get to bring the trophy back to the best high school in America," forward Joey Zenobi told WBBH-TV.
Members of the team were at BB&T Center on Thursday for the Florida Panthers' first home game since the Feb. 14 shooting. The Panthers honored the victims of the shooting in an emotional pregame ceremony.
Stoneman Douglas will play in the high school hockey national championships tournament, which will be in Plymouth, Minnesota March 22-26.
