Ilya Samsonov free agent capsule

Ilya Samsonov signed a one-year, $1.8 million contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs on Wednesday.

The 25-year-old goalie was 23-12-5 with a 3.02 goals-against average, .896 save percentage and three shutouts in 44 games (39 starts) for the Washington Capitals last season. He was 1-3 with a 2.97 GAA and .912 save percentage in five Stanley Cup Playoff games (four starts).
Samsonov became an unrestricted free agent after not receiving a qualifying offer from the Capitals.

Selected by Washington in the first round (No. 22) of the 2015 NHL Draft, Samsonov is 52-22-8 with a 2.81 GAA, .902 save percentage and six shutouts in 89 games (79 starts). He is 1-6 with a 2.98 GAA and .907 save percentage in eight playoff games (seven starts).
The Maple Leafs traded for goalie Matt Murray on Monday. The 28-year-old was 5-12-2 with a 3.05 GAA, .906 save percentage and one shutout in 20 games for the Ottawa Senators last season. He has two seasons remaining on a four-year, $25 million contract ($6.25 million average annual value) he signed with Ottawa on Oct. 9, 2020.
Selected by Pittsburgh in the third round (No. 83) of the 2012 NHL Draft, Murray is 132-78-22 with a 2.77 GAA, .911 save percentage and 14 shutouts in 246 games (238 starts) for the Penguins and Senators. He is 29-21 with a 2.18 GAA, .921 save percentage and six shutouts in 51 Stanley Cup Playoff games (50 starts) and has won the Cup twice (2016, 2017).
The Maple Leafs also signed forward Nicolas Aube-Kubel to a one-year, $1 million contract on Wednesday. The 26-year-old forward set NHL career highs in goals (11) assists (12) and points (23) in 74 games for the Colorado Avalanche and Philadelphia Flyers last season.
Aube-Kubel, who won the Stanley Cup with the Avalanche last season, had no points in 14 playoff games. Selected by Philadelphia in the second round (No. 48) of the 2014 NHL Draft, he has 50 points (21 goals, 29 assists) in 169 regular-season games for the Avalanche and Flyers, and three points (two goals, one assist) in 27 playoff games.
