Maple Leafs sign Zaitsev to one-year contract

Defenseman played in past two KHL all-star games

Defenseman Nikita Zaitsev signed a one-year, entry-level contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs on Monday. Financial terms of the contract were not released.

Zaitsev, 24, had eight goals and 26 points in 46 games for CSKA Moscow of the Kontinental Hockey League this season. He also had four goals and 13 points in 20 playoff games.

He's played in the KHL All-Star Game the past two seasons and was named a KHL first-team all-star in 2014-15. Zaitsev has 32 goals and 95 points in 317 KHL games.

Zaitsev will play for Russia in the 2016 IIHF World Championship, which will be played May 6-22 in Moscow and St. Petersburgh, Russia.
