Early in the first period of the Toronto Maple Leafs' game against the Phoenix Coyotes on Dec. 19, Maple Leafs defenseman Dion Phaneuf set the tone for what would be a physical game.
When Coyotes center Martin Hanzal went after the puck in the corner, Phaneuf met him shoulder-to-shoulder. It was one of Phaneuf's eight hits on the game, one short of the team high.
Toronto broke through late in the first with the game's opening goal. When Hanzal tied the game in the third period, the Maple Leafs ultimately overcame it and emerged victorious with a 2-1 shootout win.
