Maple Leafs looking to move up in first round

by Staff

The Toronto Maple Leafs have the eighth pick in the first round of the 2014 NHL Draft. They do right now, at least.

Maple Leafs general manager David Nonis told the Toronto Sun he has had discussions with other teams about moving up in the first round.

"It's a deep draft," Nonis said. "That's why you have four teams at the top open to trading down."

The Florida Panthers have the top pick, but general manager Dale Tallon has said he's open to a trade, and said he has received one "fair offer" from another team.

"There are some players we rank higher and have interest in," Nonis said.

However, if the Maple Leafs are unsuccessful in moving up, Nonis said, "We're confident of getting a good player at No. 8 if we stay there."
