PITTSBURGH -- Pittsburgh Penguins star center Evgeni Malkin remains out of the lineup, but he did skate on his own before the team's morning skate Tuesday.
Malkin, who has an upper-body injury, will miss his second consecutive game when Pittsburgh hosts the Boston Bruins 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. He apparently sustained the injury -- likely to his right shoulder -- while colliding with the boards after a hit from the Toronto Maple Leafs' James van Riemsdyk late during a game Saturday night.
Bylsma said Sunday that Malkin would be out 1-2 weeks. The reigning National Hockey League scoring champion and MVP has 24 points (five goals, 19 assists) in 21 games this season. He missed four games two weeks ago due to a concussion and had three points in three games upon returning before being knocked out of the lineup again.
The League leader in goals, Pittsburgh is 3-2 without Malkin. The Penguins (18-8-0) have won five in a row and lead the Atlantic Division by seven points.
Here are the projected lines and defensemen pairings for Tuesday night's game between the Penguins and Boston Bruins at Consol Energy Center:
Milan Lucic - David Krejci - Nathan Horton
Brad Marchand - Patrice Bergeron - Tyler Seguin
Jay Pandolfo - Rich Peverley - Jordan Caron
Daniel Paille - Gregory Campbell - Shawn Thornton
Zdeno Chara - Johnny Boychuk
Dennis Seidenberg - Dougie Hamilton
Andrew Ference - Adam McQuaid
Injured: Chris Kelly (lower body)
Scratched: Aaron Johnson, Lane MacDermid
Playing their second of a stretch of five games in seven days, the Bruins canceled their morning skate Tuesday for almost all of their players. Kelly, who left Monday's game against the Ottawa Senators after a collision with Chris Neil, is out indefinitely. Pandolfo regains a spot in the lineup lost when the Bruins promoted former first-round pick Jordan Caron from the American Hockey League. MacDermid, who has not played since Feb. 6, also was in the mix.
Khudobin starts in place of Rask, who started 18 of Boston's first 23 games.
Chris Kunitz – Sidney Crosby – Pascal Dupuis
Beau Bennett – Dustin Jeffrey – James Neal
Matt Cooke - Brandon Sutter – Tyler Kennedy
Tanner Glass – Joe Vitale – Craig Adams
Mark Eaton – Kris Letang
Brooks Orpik – Paul Martin
Simon Despres – Matt Niskanen
Injured: Evgeni Malkin (upper body)
Scratched: Deryk Engelland, Robert Bortuzzo
As is customary for Bylsma, he was evasive in addressing which six of his eight defensemen would dress -- but the pairings during the morning skate suggest the Penguins will stick with the same lineup they used during a 6-1 win against the New York Islanders on Sunday. Engelland was scratched for the first time this season that game, and Bylsma said that was not a reflection of his performance in the game prior. Bylsma said matchups against different styles of opponents will determine who among Eaton, Despres, Engelland and Bortuzzo will play on a nightly basis.
