MOOSE JAW, Sask. - Luke Egener scored the lone goal in the shootout to give the Red Deer Rebels a 4-3 win over the Moose Jaw Warriors in WHL action Wednesday night.
It was another heartbreaker at home for the Warriors as they gave up three leads - none more costly than the tying goal with 22 seconds remaining - and were unable to score in the shootout.
The teams traded power-play goals in the second. Matt MacKay put the Warriors ahead 2:19 in, but Cass Mappin tied it before the intermission.
In the third, Moose Jaw captain Jason Bast restored the lead on the power play, only to have Moose Jaw product Brennen Wray again even the score less then three minutes later.
Dylan Hood gave the Warriors the advantage for the final time at 8:15, but the hometown crowd was deflated as Landon Ferraro forced overtime and eventually a shootout.
Five Rebels and five Warriors would shoot and miss before Egener beat goaltender Jeff Bosch. Quinton Howden rang one off the post to end the game.
Bosch stopped 31 of 34 shots, while Darcy Kuemper made 20 saves in net for the Rebels.
Moose Jaw (15-35-1-1) stands last in the Eastern Conference, while Red Deer (17-27-1-7) moved to within eight points of Regina for the final playoff position.
