Skinner, McDavid fuel Oilers' 2-0 win over the Kings

EDMONTON -- Connor McDavid scored his 300th NHL goal, and Stuart Skinner made 43 saves for the Edmonton Oilers in a 2-0 win against the Los Angeles Kings at Rogers Place on Thursday.

McDavid has 841 points (300 goals, 541 assists) in 563 games. He is the fifth player in NHL history to score 300 goals and have 500 assists prior to his 600th NHL game, joining Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, Peter Stastny and Bryan Trottier.
Evander Kane scored, and Leon Draisaitl got his 70th assist of the season to extend his point streak to 11 games for the Oilers (44-23-9), who moved into second place in the Pacific Division, one point ahead of the Kings and two behind the Vegas Golden Knights, who lost 4-3 in overtime at the San Jose Sharks on Thursday.
"I thought he [Skinner] was amazing, I thought he was really, really good and made some big saves, especially in the second period, and coming down the stretch," McDavid said. "I thought they did a good job of pressing and had a couple of chances, but he held us in."

Joonas Korpisalo made 35 saves for the Kings (43-22-10), who have lost two straight following a 12-game point streak (10-0-2).
"I thought it was a [heck] of a game, both teams played really hard and it came down to a bounce or a break or two, and they were able to score," Los Angeles coach Todd McLellan said. "We had some real good looks and we ran into a hot goaltender and didn't quite get it over the goal line. But I thought it was a heck of game."
The Kings were without leading scorer Kevin Fiala (70 points; 22 goals, 48 assists), who was a late scratch with a lower-body injury, and they lost defenseman Mikey Anderson 1:28 into the first period when he was hit from behind by McDavid. They were also without forward Gabriel Vilardi, who missed his second game with an upper-body injury.
"That's not something you want, obviously, that's three key guys out," Los Angeles defenseman Matt Roy said. "But there are no excuses. You just need to find ways to win, and hopefully they can get healthy and join us as soon as they can."
Kane gave the Oilers a 1-0 lead at 19:08 of the first period when he one-timed a cross-ice, backhand pass over the shoulder of Korpisalo.

Skinner made an outstanding glove save on Adrian Kempe on a breakaway at 9:50 of the second period to keep Edmonton in front.
It was Skinner's first shutout of the season and second in the NHL. The Oilers had not had a shutout this season.
"I felt pretty good. I think confidence grows as the team is doing such a good job in front of me," Skinner said. "I think for a full 60 minutes, we just battled hard. Being able to get the two points is massive. We were so hungry to win every battle and I think that was very impressive to watch, seeing our guys fight for every single puck, every 1-on-1 battle, every scrum in front of the net."
McDavid scored on a short-handed breakaway at 3:53 of the third period to make it 2-0. He leads the NHL with 61 goals.
"That's the type of game you have to play against this team, we know that," Edmonton coach Jay Woodcroft said. "We've seen a lot of them here over the last 14 or 15 months, and you have to have a lot of patience and endurance to your game. It's understanding the way they want the game to be played and trying to negate some of their strengths and waiting for opportunities to present themselves without forcing anything."

The goal extended McDavid's point streak to 10 games (20 points; seven goals, 13 assists). He is the only player in NHL history to have a point streak of 10 or more games five times in a single season. Gretzky did it four times in 1986-87.
"I thought we were patient all game; we talked about that, playing this group," McDavid said. "It is going to be a patient game. They like to make it tough, and obviously we are comfortable in these games. I thought that was a really good message to send, not only to them, but to everyone that we can play that patient game and win."
