LANGLEY, B.C. - Curtis Loik scored twice to help Canada West beat the Czech Republic 4-1 to move into the semifinals at the World Junior A Challenge on Thursday.
Loik got the scoring started for Canada West late in the first period after batting a rebound past goaltender Patrik Polivka.
He made it 2-0 eight minutes into the second, using quick hands to slip the puck around a poke-checking Polivka.
Canada West will play Sweden in the semifinal Friday.
Luke Juha, with Canada West's first power-play goal in 20 opportunities, and Travis St. Denis, on a short-handed penalty shot in the closing minutes, scored the other Canadian goals while goalie Sean Maguire made 20 saves.
Radim Matus scored the lone goal for the Czechs, who will take on Russia in Saturday's fifth-place game.
Meanwhile, the United States advanced to the semifinals with a 6-3 win over Russia. The defending champion Americans play Canada East on Friday.
