Lidstrom, Green, Chara named finalists for NHL's Norris Trophy @NHLdotcom

NEW YORK - Nicklas Lidstrom of the Detroit Red Wings, Mike Green of the Washington Capitals and Zdeno Chara of the Boston Bruins are the finalists for the Norris Trophy as the NHL's top defenceman, the league announced Thursday.

Lidstrom will be seeking his seventh Norris Trophy in the last eight seasons. The 38-year-old native of Vasteras, Sweden had another solid season for the Red Wings, with 16 goals, 43 assists and a plus-31 rating in 78 games. He finished the year three points shy of 1,000 for his career.

Green, a first-round pick of the Capitals (29th overall) in the 2004 draft, earned his first Norris nomination after leading all defencemen in goals (31) and points (73) despite playing just 68 games. The 23-year-old Calgary native became just the seventh blue-liner to score 30 goals in a season, and the first since Washington's Kevin Hatcher in 1992-93.

Chara, a third-round pick of the New York Islanders (56th overall) in 1996, had a career-high 19 goals to go with 31 assists and a plus-23 rating in 80 games. The six-foot-nine behemoth led the Bruins to a 53-19-10 record, tops in the Eastern Conference.

The trophy will be handed out June 18 during the NHL awards ceremony in Las Vegas.
