Leafs trade Ashton, Broll to Lightning for conditional seventh-round pick @NHLdotcom

TORONTO - The Maple Leafs have traded forwards Carter Ashton and David Broll to the Tampa Bay Lightning for a conditional seventh-round pick in 2016.

Ashton, a 2009 first-round pick of the Lightning, has no points in seven games this season and served a 20-game performance-enhancing drug suspension.

The 23-year-old is a restricted free agent after this season.

Broll, a sixth-rounder in 2011, played five games for the Leafs last season and has split time in 2014-'15 between the AHL's Marlies and ECHL's Orlando Solar Bears.

By unloading Ashton and Broll, the Leafs cleared space that allows them to acquire two more contracts before the March 2 trade deadline.

The NHL limit is 50, and this trade gets them to 48.
