Latvia advances to qualifying round with 2-0 win over Austria @NHLdotcom

BERN, Switzerland - Edgars Masalskis stopped 21 shots as Latvia advanced to the second round of the IIHF World Hockey Championship with a 2-0 victory over Austria on Wednesday.

Martins Cipulis and Guntis Dzerins scored for the Latvians, who built upon their upset shootout victory over Sweden two days ago.

Bernd Bruckler made 35 saves for Austria.

In other tournament action Wednesday, it was: Norway 5, Denmark 4 in overtime. Scheduled for later was, Sweden facing the United States, and Finland battling the Czech Republic.

At Bern, Cipulis scored in the final minute of the first period and Latvia wasn't able to get any breathing room until Dzerins scored on a breakaway with about five minutes left.

At Kloten, defenceman Tommy Jakobsen scored 1:11 into overtime to lift Norway into the tournament's second round.

Patrick Thoresen, Anders Bastiansen, Tore Vikingstad and Mats Zuccarello Aasen also scored for Norway, which joins Finland and the Czech Republic in advancing from Group D.

Alexander Sundberg, Jesper Damgaard, Morten Green and Daniel Nielsen replied for Denmark.
