Latendresse, Backlund score twice each as Abbotsford Heat burn Toronto Marlies @NHLdotcom

TORONTO - Olivier Latendresse and Mikael Backlund each scored twice as the Abbotsford Heat knocked off the Marlies 5-1 in American Hockey League action Monday afternoon at Ricoh Coliseum.

Cam Cunning also scored for the Heat (26-23-8), who moved two points ahead of Manitoba and into sole possession of third place in the North Division.

Justin Hodgman scored the lone goal for the Marlies (20-26-10).

David Shantz stopped 22 of 23 shots for the win. Marlies goalie James Reimer allowed five goals on 39 shots in the loss.

The Heat led 2-1 heading into the third period, when they outshot the Marlies 17-7 and broke the game open with three unanswered goals.

Abbotsford was 2-for-7 on the power play, while Toronto went 1-for-3.

The Marlies played without forward Andre Deveaux, who was suspended by the AHL indefinitely after throwing a roll of tape into the crowd during Friday's game against the Moose in Winnipeg.
